The requirements document lists no end date, but the program's other streams close in late 2026, so check the program page before you sign a contract. Pre-approval is mandatory: an installation done first earns nothing.

Guelph housing

The 2021 Census counts 49% of households in detached houses, 69% in an eligible type and 4.7% reporting a home needing major repairs. 44% live in homes built before 1981 and 10,940 are owner-occupied detached houses of that age. 12% live in tall apartments and 14% in low-rise buildings.

Alectra

Guelph's electric utility is Alectra Utilities, which took over Guelph Hydro. Alectra does not set the heat pump rebate. Ask whether Alectra offers anything on your bill, and whether it can be combined.

Rated capacity and tons

A rebate for a 2-ton air-source system is $1,000 for a gas home or $2,500 for an electric one. The ton figure is the rated heating capacity at 8.3°C divided by 12,000 BTU/h, taken from the NRCan listing. Ask the contractor to show the listing for the exact model and outdoor unit pairing.

Thermostat and controls

The post-installation application includes a photo of the installed thermostat. Ask which thermostat controls the system and how it interacts with any backup heat. With a gas furnace kept as backup, the controls decide when each heat source runs.

What the post-installation file contains

Within 30 days of the install the contractor submits the final itemized invoice, photos of the installed equipment and thermostat, and installation details. For a Guelph home with several outdoor units, each unit needs its own record. The cheque arrives within 60 days of approval.

Existing heat pumps and AC

A home that already uses a heat pump for space heating is not eligible. A Guelph owner whose only cooling is an air conditioner should ask the program how the unit is classed. The heat pump system that is installed must include all indoor and outdoor components and be capable of heating and cooling year-round.

How to claim in Guelph

  1. Find the rated capacity of the model you are quoted.
  2. Confirm eligibility on the program's short form and get the list of participating HVAC contractors.
  3. Choose a contractor from that list. Ask for a load calculation and the NRCan sizing tool form for each outdoor unit.
  4. Wait for written pre-approval before any installation starts.
  5. After the install, check that the contractor files the post-installation application within 30 days, with the final itemized invoice and photos.
