How much is the Massachusetts heat pump rebate in 2026?

      Short answer: Through Mass Save, a whole-home air-source heat pump gets $2,650 per ton, up to $8,500. A partial-home system (you keep your old boiler or furnace as backup) gets $1,125 per ton, up to $8,500, plus up to $1,000 in bonuses. Income-qualified households can get up to $16,000, or no cost. Ground-source systems get $13,500, or up to $25,000 with enhanced rebates. The federal tax credit ended December 31, 2025.

To qualify, you need a Mass Save Heat Pump Installer Network contractor and an ENERGY STAR Cold Climate unit from the qualified list, installed in 2026. Whole-home rebates also need a weatherized home and a signed verification form. The 0% HEAT Loan covers up to $25,000 over up to 7 years. Towns with a municipal light plant (like Concord, Wellesley, Braintree or Taunton) aren't part of Mass Save's electric programs.

Should I get a heat pump or solar first?

If you heat with oil, propane or electric baseboard, a heat pump usually cuts your bills more. It also has the bigger upfront rebate. Solar in Massachusetts has no upfront Mass Save rebate. Instead, SMART 3.0 pays small home systems $0.03 per kWh they make ($0.06 for low-income), and the state tax credit covers 15% of cost, up to $1,000. The whole-home heat pump ceiling is $8,500 in 2026, down from $10,000 in 2024, and regulators trimmed the 2025–2027 Mass Save budget by $500 million, and Mass Save has documented processing delays (mailed rebates can take months), so treat these as caps to plan around, not guaranteed instant payouts. Will a heat pump heat my Massachusetts home in winter?
