How rebates work in Yukon

The Government of Yukon runs the Good Energy rebates for homes, with some funding from the federal Low Carbon Economy Fund. A newer set, the Dependable Grid Program, started in 2026 to cut winter electricity demand. The Energy Branch answers questions at energy@yukon.ca or 867-393-7063, toll-free in the Yukon at 1-800-661-0408. Its office is on the 2nd floor of 4114 4th Avenue, RBC Building, Whitehorse, open Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Our Yukon rebate calculator adds up only what is open for your home.

Heat pumps: two programs

Affordable Heat Pump Program. For lower-income households, this covers 100% of a heat pump project up to $24,000, including electrical upgrades and controls. You must own the home, live in it, and have it be at least 6 months old. You must be approved before installing: anything installed first is not eligible. Your after-tax household income (line 23600 minus line 43500 for every adult) must be under:

ResidentsAfter-tax income limit
1$53,820
2$110,400
3$139,150
4$163,300
5 or more$184,000

Households that heat with oil get a $250 upfront payment from Natural Resources Canada. You cannot use the program if you received funding from NRCan's Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program.

Heat pump rebate. Everyone else, and anyone not approved, can claim 50% of project costs up to $10,500 for an air-source heat pump on NRCan's cold climate list for Manitoba and Yukon, or an ENERGY STAR ground-source heat pump. Keep your existing heat as a backup. Electric-heated homes must also enrol in Yukon Energy's Peak Smart Home program. Cheques come within 12 weeks.

Ottawa announced a National Heat Pump Rebate on October 8, 2026, expected to start in early 2027. How it will combine with Yukon programs is not published yet. See our National Heat Pump Rebate guide.

Insulation, air sealing and windows

You need an energy assessment before insulation or air sealing rebates, and another after the work. The home must be 5 years or older. Maximums:

  • Above-ground walls: up to $12,000, and you must at least double the existing insulation level. The amount follows the share of wall area you insulate.
  • Below-ground walls: up to $10,000, in proportion to depth up to 6 feet.
  • Slab or floor system: $2,000.
  • Attic: $2,500, for an attic at R40 or less raised to R60 or more.
  • Air sealing: $5,000 per building when you reach 1.5 air changes per hour or fewer, with an HRV installed.

ENERGY STAR windows pay $120 each, up to $1,800 per home, for complete window assemblies in a heated building at least five years old.

Dependable Grid: non-electric heating

For homes with electric heat, the Dependable Grid Program pays 50% of costs for new heating that lowers winter electricity use:

  • Primary oil or propane heating: up to $15,000 for existing homes.
  • Secondary oil, propane or wood backup: up to $5,000.
  • Dual fuel, a heat pump plus a non-electric backup that works in a power outage: up to $15,000.

You do not need to remove your electric heating. Wood heating systems, such as EPA-listed stoves, boilers and pellet stoves, also earn 50% up to $2,500 in buildings 5 years or older.

Financing and what we did not read

The Better Buildings program offers low-cost funding of up to 25% of the property's assessed value, to a maximum of $50,000, repaid through a local improvement tax. Yukon's rebate page also lists rebates for heat recovery ventilators, drain-water heat recovery, ENERGY STAR appliances, solar hot water, smart thermostats and hot water tank controllers, and new homes. We did not read those pages, so we do not list their amounts.
