What Montréal homes look like
The 2021 Census counted 816,340 households in Montréal.
- Renters. 519,020 households (64%) rent, and 297,340 own.
- Small apartment buildings. 464,420 households (57%) live in apartment buildings under five storeys, and 107,565 (13%) in an apartment in a duplex.
- Older buildings. 541,910 homes (66%) were built before 1981.
- Repairs. 70,075 homes (9%) needed major repairs.
The median household total income was $63,600 in 2020, before tax, and about 24% of households earned under $35,000.
If you own a plex or small building
Rénoclimat's new terms, in force since October 1, 2026, pay more for duplexes, triplexes and multi-unit residential buildings than for houses: up to $5,000 for the roof (a house gets $2,000), $11,000 for exterior walls ($7,000), $3,500 for foundations ($2,500), and up to $6,000 for windows at $300 each ($4,500). A pre-work energy evaluation is no longer required but is recommended, and an evaluation grant of up to $500 is offered. A licensed contractor must do the work. The new Rénoclimat portal was still being built when we read the page, so keep your invoices and the contractor's signed compliance form.
Heat pumps in multi-unit buildings
LogisVert's heat pump grant is up to $6,700. For a multi-unit building that meets the criteria, such as one in an area designated energy insecure, an ENERGY STAR cold climate wall-mounted heat pump can earn $220 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 C, which is a $100 bonus on top of the $120 base. Hydro-Québec says that can reach more than 80% of the cost. The owner of the building receives the assistance. Combining at least two measures in one application adds 5%. Hydro-Québec's page has a tool to check your eligibility, and the portal is in French only. Support is at 1-833-396-1888.
If you rent your Montréal home
With 519,020 renting households, most people cannot apply for these grants themselves. The grants go to the owner of the building. What you can do is ask your landlord about them, and use LogisVert's appliance grants if you own the appliance: $250 for an induction range (not a cooktop) and $250 for a heat pump dryer. Ask your landlord, too, about the new flood protection stream, which pays for a submersible pump with a battery (up to $1,000), a backwater valve (up to $700) and a removable flood barrier (up to $800).
What changed, and what we could not confirm
Some websites still list a Rénoclimat maximum of $3,750 or a Chauffez vert program. We could not confirm either on an official page. Ottawa's National Heat Pump Rebate is expected in early 2027. See our National Heat Pump Rebate guide.

- Hire a licensed contractor and keep invoices and the signed compliance form.

Common questions
Do tenants in Montréal get the LogisVert grant?
The grants are for the person who buys and installs the equipment, usually the building owner. Ask your landlord, or apply yourself for appliances you buy.
How much does Rénoclimat pay for a plex roof?
Up to $5,000 for a duplex, triplex or multi-unit building, compared with $2,000 for a house.
What is the multi-unit heat pump bonus?
A $100 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 C bonus, bringing the grant to $220, for an ENERGY STAR wall-mounted cold climate heat pump in a building that meets criteria such as being in an energy insecure area.
Is the LogisVert portal in English?
No. Hydro-Québec says the portal is in French only. Program support is at 1-833-396-1888.
Does Montréal have its own home rebate?
We found no City of Montréal home energy grant on Hydro-Québec's or the Québec government's pages.
