Kamloops Home Energy Rebates

Half of Kamloops households (51% of 39,915) live in a home built before 1981, and winters reach -34.3°C. That combination makes insulation the rebate to look at before anything else.

Questions about Kamloops, from the data behind this page. Tap an answer to see why.

1. Rebates in Kamloops often depend on the utility. Which one do we use for Kamloops?

2. On average, how low does the temperature fall in Kamloops in January?

Our weather sample for Kamloops (2015-2024) shows an average January low of -6 °C. Cold-climate heat pumps are tested at low temperatures, so check the rating at your coldest days, not just the average.

3. About how many peak sun hours a day does Kamloops get on average?

Our 2020-2024 sunshine sample for Kamloops averages about 3.6 peak sun hours a day. Fewer hours means less solar power per panel, so the size of the system matters.

The older-house pool

The 2021 Census counted 9,895 owner-occupied detached houses built before 1981 in Kamloops, with 70% of households owning overall and 50% living in detached houses. About 5.1% reported needing major repairs. These houses are the target for BC Hydro's insulation rebate of up to $5,500 and its window rebate of up to $2,000, both for homes heated mainly by electricity.

A colder interior winter

The January average low in our climate file is -6.1°C and the coldest day in 2015 to 2024 was -34.3°C. BC Hydro's heat pump rule asks the system to cover 100% of the heating load at -5°C, which is a much easier test on the coast than here, so ask an installer what the model delivers at -20°C and whether a backup is needed. Solar gets about 3.64 peak sun hours a day, a good number in this group.

Electric versus gas homes

Kamloops electricity is BC Hydro. A house on baseboards can claim up to $4,000 for a whole-home heat pump. A house heated by natural gas from FortisBC cannot claim the BC Hydro heat pump rebate, and an income-qualified household can instead use CleanBC at $3,500, $7,000 or $13,000. Above those income limits, insulation is the sound first step because it pays off whatever you burn.

Sequence matters

Insulate first, then size the heat pump. A tighter house needs less equipment, and the heat pump load calculation should use the post-insulation numbers if the work will be done within a year.
