A small town in a cold pocket

The January average low is 0.2°C, much like Abbotsford, but the coldest day was -28.1°C. The gap between average and extreme is why the heat pump needs a real load calculation. BC Hydro asks for equipment that covers 100% of the load at -5°C, and in Squamish a cold snap goes well past that.

Squamish's housing

The 2021 Census counted 9,185 households. 34% live in homes built before 1981, 41% in detached houses and 70% own. 1,645 are owner-occupied detached houses from before 1981. Major repairs were reported by 5.4%.

Electric versus gas

Squamish electricity is BC Hydro, so electric-heated houses can claim up to $4,000 for a heat pump, up to $5,500 for insulation, up to $2,000 for windows and up to $1,000 for a water heater. A house on gas, oil or propane uses CleanBC income help at $3,500, $7,000 or $13,000.

Sun

Solar gets about 3.27 peak sun hours a day. Rebates of up to $5,000 for solar are available but depend on funding.
