Quick quiz: home energy in Coquitlam

Questions about Coquitlam, from the data behind this page. Tap an answer to see why.

1. Rebates in Coquitlam often depend on the utility. Which one do we use for Coquitlam?

BC Hydro is the utility we use for Coquitlam. Rebates often depend on who supplies your power or gas, so check yours first.

2. What is a typical January night low in Coquitlam?

Our weather sample for Coquitlam (2015-2024) shows an average January low of 1 °C. Cold-climate heat pumps are tested at low temperatures, so check the rating at your coldest days, not just the average.

3. About how many peak sun hours a day does Coquitlam get on average?

Our 2020-2024 sunshine sample for Coquitlam averages about 3.2 peak sun hours a day. Fewer hours means less solar power per panel, so the size of the system matters.

4. What is the largest 'up to' heat pump figure on our Coquitlam summary?

Our summary for Coquitlam: Up to $4,000 from BC Hydro when replacing electric heat (+ up to $1,000 bonus for installs done by Oct 31, 2026); income-qualified gas/oil/propane switches up to $13,000 via CleanBC. The amount you get depends on your home, income and utility, so use the calculator.

5. Out of 100 homes in Coquitlam, about how many are rented?

The 2021 Census counts 17,155 renter households out of 55,945 in Coquitlam. Many rebates go to owners, and some programs have separate rules for landlords and tenants.

Three kinds of Coquitlam home, three different answers

A detached house heated by electricity can claim from BC Hydro's Home Renovation Rebates, up to $4,000 for a heat pump and up to $5,500 for insulation. A townhouse can too if it has its own heating and meter. A condo or apartment is excluded from those rebates and has its own BC Hydro program. Roughly 35% of Coquitlam households live in detached houses and about 36% in apartments, so a large share of the city needs the strata route.

Burke Mountain and the community top-ups

BC Hydro's community-based offers list "Port Coquitlam, Burke Mountain". Burke Mountain is in northeast Coquitlam, so some of its postal codes may qualify; the rest of the city gets the standard amounts. In a qualifying postal code, a heat pump replacing electric heat earns $4,000 more (whole home) or $1,500 more (partial). Also, a Level 2 EV charger at a single-family home gets a $1,750 top-up (up to the full cost) on top of the $350 rebate, if you apply between August 4 and December 31, 2026 and enroll the charger in Peak Saver for its $250 bonus. And select ENERGY STAR fridges, washers and dryers get double the regular rebate (see our BC appliance rebates page). Check your address on BC Hydro's postal code checker before you plan around it.

Census numbers for the older houses

In 2021, 30% of Coquitlam households lived in homes built before 1981, and 7,305 of them are owner-occupied detached houses. About 69% of households own. A further 4.4% reported needing major repairs. The 1960s and 1970s houses on the slopes are the ones most likely to have low attic insulation and original windows, so insulation and window rebates are the first thing to price after the heating system.

Gas customers and the CleanBC route

Coquitlam is served by BC Hydro for electricity and FortisBC for natural gas. A gas furnace is not covered by BC Hydro's heat pump rebate. Households under the CleanBC income limits can claim $3,500, $7,000 or $13,000 by level for a central or three-head heat pump, and the household of four limits are published in the program document. Above those limits we found no provincial rebate for replacing a gas furnace with a heat pump.

Why the weather barely matters here

The January average low is 0.7°C and the record low in our 2015 to 2024 data is -16.8°C. The heat pump needs to meet the load at -5°C for the BC Hydro rebate, and that is easy for a modern cold-climate model in Coquitlam.
