A house-and-owner city
In the 2021 Census, 29% of Maple Ridge households lived in homes built before 1981, and 5,160 of those homes are owner-occupied detached houses. Major repairs were reported by 4.8%. Maple Ridge has the second-highest owner share in the group after the Township of Langley. For an electric-heated house the BC Hydro rebates up to $4,000 (heat pump), $5,500 (insulation), $2,000 (windows) and $1,000 (water heater) can all apply to the same project.
Maple Ridge top-ups by postal code
Maple Ridge is on BC Hydro's list of community-based offers, but only select postal codes qualify. In those areas, a heat pump replacing electric heat earns $4,000 more for a whole home or $1,500 more for a partial system. Also, a Level 2 EV charger at a single-family home gets a $1,750 top-up (up to the full cost) on top of the $350 rebate, if you apply between August 4 and December 31, 2026 and enroll the charger in Peak Saver for its $250 bonus. And select ENERGY STAR fridges, washers and dryers get double the regular rebate (see our BC appliance rebates page). None of this helps a house on propane or oil, since the heat pump top-up follows the same electric-heat rule as the standard rebate. Check your address on BC Hydro's postal code checker.
Rural lots and fuel
Where homes sit away from gas lines, propane or oil is common, and BC Hydro will not rebate a heat pump that replaces those fuels. CleanBC pays $3,500, $7,000 or $13,000 for income-qualified households who switch to a central or three-head heat pump. We cannot say how many Maple Ridge homes use each fuel, so check your own bills.
Colder than the rest of the Lower Mainland
The 2015 to 2024 record low was -19.6°C, which is lower than Burnaby, Richmond or Surrey, although the January average low is a mild 0.1°C. Size the heat pump to BC Hydro's -5°C rule and ask the installer what the unit does at -15°C.
Solar and battery
Solar here gets about 3.19 peak sun hours a day, the lowest figure in our data. Rebates up to $5,000 for solar and up to $5,000 for a battery with Peak Saver are available but depend on funding.
