Quick quiz: home energy in Surrey

Questions about Surrey, from the data behind this page. Tap an answer to see why.

1. Rebates in Surrey often depend on the utility. Which one do we use for Surrey?

BC Hydro is the utility we use for Surrey. Rebates often depend on who supplies your power or gas, so check yours first.

2. On average, how low does the temperature fall in Surrey in January?

Our weather sample for Surrey (2015-2024) shows an average January low of 1 °C. Cold-climate heat pumps are tested at low temperatures, so check the rating at your coldest days, not just the average.

3. Daily peak sun hours in Surrey average about:

Our 2020-2024 sunshine sample for Surrey averages about 3.4 peak sun hours a day. Fewer hours means less solar power per panel, so the size of the system matters.

4. We list heat pump rebates for Surrey. What is the biggest 'up to' amount?

Our summary for Surrey: Up to $4,000 from BC Hydro when replacing electric heat (+ up to $1,000 bonus for installs done by Oct 31, 2026); income-qualified gas/oil/propane switches up to $13,000 via CleanBC. The amount you get depends on your home, income and utility, so use the calculator.

5. Out of 100 homes in Surrey, about how many are rented?

The 2021 Census counts 56,570 renter households out of 185,670 in Surrey. Many rebates go to owners, and some programs have separate rules for landlords and tenants.

The numbers behind the city

The 2021 Census counted 185,670 households in Surrey. Of these, 70% own and about 33% live in detached houses. Only 20% live in homes built before 1981, but because the city is so large that is still 12,485 owner-occupied detached houses, the biggest pool among the cities we track outside Vancouver. Major repairs were reported by 3.8% of households, the lowest share in the set.

Campbell Heights gets more

BC Hydro's community-based offers reach only one part of Surrey: select postal codes in Campbell Heights. If you live there, a heat pump that replaces electric heat earns $4,000 more (whole home) or $1,500 more (partial). In the same postal codes, a Level 2 EV charger at a single-family home gets a $1,750 top-up (up to the full cost) on top of the $350 rebate, if you apply between August 4 and December 31, 2026 and enroll the charger in Peak Saver for its $250 bonus. And select ENERGY STAR fridges, washers and dryers get double the regular rebate (see our BC appliance rebates page). Everywhere else in Surrey, the amounts in the cards above are what you can expect. Check your address on BC Hydro's postal code checker.

How that changes which rebate comes first

Because most Surrey homes are newer, the attic and wall insulation rebate matters less on average than it does in Kamloops or Victoria. The sized heat pump and heat pump water heater are the more common first projects for an electric-heated home. A pre-1981 Surrey house, meanwhile, is a strong candidate for all three: BC Hydro pays up to $5,500 for insulation, up to $4,000 for a heat pump and up to $2,000 for windows, within an overall ceiling that BC Hydro lists at $12,500.

Gas, oil or propane homes

Surrey electricity is BC Hydro. If your home heats with natural gas, the gas utility is FortisBC, and BC Hydro will not rebate a heat pump that replaces gas. Income-qualified households can get $3,500, $7,000 or $13,000 from CleanBC. Everyone else should look at insulation and a heat pump water heater, and compare financing, since we found no standard provincial rebate above the income limits.

Climate and solar

The January average low is 0.7°C and the record in 2015 to 2024 was -16.7°C. Solar gets about 3.38 peak sun hours a day. A cold-climate heat pump handles that range easily.
