Who's behind this — and why it's independent

HomePowerRebate is a plain-English guide to home-energy rebates across Canada and the US, built region by region. It isn't run by an installer, a manufacturer, or a utility. Here's the honest version of who built it and how it makes money.

161cities covered
23provinces and states
628official program pages we re-read every month
504installer lists ranked by Google reviews

HomePowerRebate was built because homeowners told us the same story again and again: they wanted to claim a heat pump, solar, or battery rebate, but every comparison site they tried sold their info to a dozen installers. They got buried in calls. The rebate cheque felt out of reach because the process was hostile.

We do it the other way. In each city we list the top-rated installers, ranked only by Google reviews. Nobody can pay to rank higher. You choose who to call. We never sell your details or auction your request. We are not part of any utility, and we link to the official page for every rebate we mention.

Today we cover 161 cities in 23 provinces and states. We add a new place only when we can read its programs on the official pages.

How we check the numbers

Every rebate amount on this site comes from the program's own page, and we link to that page right next to the amount. We re-read every source once a month. When a program closes or an amount changes, we fix the page and show the date we last checked it. If a number can't be confirmed on an official page, we don't show it as a sure thing.

About Sam Menard

My name is Sam Menard. I'm a business and technology leader who enjoys building things from the ground up—especially when there's an opportunity to take a great idea and turn it into something people actually use.

Over the course of my career, I've worked across technology, digital products, startups and large organizations, with a particular focus on launching and scaling businesses in North America and global markets. I've had the opportunity to lead some pretty unique projects, including helping launch the App Store across 90 emerging markets, as well as bringing new products and companies to the Canadian market from the early seed stage through Series B.

Today, I'm focused on digital health with the incredible team at Shoppers Drug Mart, where I'm working to make health care more accessible, convenient and connected for Canadians. I'm especially interested in the intersection of technology, AI, personalization and health—and how we can use those tools to create experiences that genuinely make people's lives easier.

I've always been drawn to the challenge of taking something that's complicated and making it simple. Whether that means launching a new business, growing a digital product, figuring out how technology can solve a real-world problem, or helping a team turn an idea into reality, that's the work I enjoy most.

Why HomePowerRebate?

As a homeowner myself, I understand how overwhelming it can be to figure out rebates and incentives for major household projects. When I was researching heat pumps for my own home, I realized how broken the process was—confusing websites, contradictory information, and self-interested comparisons that sell your info to installers instead of helping you.

HomePowerRebate came from that frustration. I built this as a homeowner, for homeowners. The mission is simple: take the confusion out of rebates, help you understand what you actually qualify for, and show you the top-rated installers near you, so you choose who to call. My goal is to help other homeowners save money on major household expenses without the pressure or the runaround.

Beyond work

Outside of work, you'll usually find me around a hockey rink. I'm actively involved in coaching girls' rep hockey, which has taught me at least as much about leadership, motivation and teamwork as any business role ever has. And when I'm not at the rink, there's a pretty good chance I'm watching the Raptors.

I'm curious by nature, optimistic about what technology can do, and always interested in what's next.

What "independent" actually means

  • Not a utility. HomePowerRebate is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by any utility, province, or state agency. We just explain their programs and link to them.
  • Not an installer or manufacturer. We don't sell heat pumps, solar panels, or batteries, so we have no reason to steer you toward one product over another.
  • You choose who to contact. We show you the top-rated installers in your city, ranked by Google reviews, and you pick who you want to connect with — no high-pressure sales.

How we make money

Right now, nobody pays us. Homeowners don't pay, and installers don't pay. There are no referral fees and no paid listings. If that ever changes, we will say so here and on our how we rank page. Money will never change where a company ranks.

What we're not

We're a starting point, not a substitute for official confirmation. Rebate amounts, eligibility, and deadlines change, and your exact numbers depend on your home, your income, and an EnerGuide evaluation. Always confirm your specifics with the official program and a licensed professional before you sign anything. When a program has closed or a number has changed, we update the guide and show you the date.

For installers

Our rankings come only from Google reviews, so there is no form to apply and no way to pay for a better spot. If your company is listed and something is wrong, like a service you don't offer or a city you don't serve, tell us and we'll fix it.
