What is open for Red Deer homes in 2026

Smart thermostat rebate
For replacing your thermostat with a smart thermostat from the City's qualifying list, bought in 2026 and installed in Red Deer. You need a City of Red Deer utility account, and it is one rebate per account.
Energy and water toolkit
The Red Deer Public Library lends an energy and water conservation toolkit and a thermal imaging camera, and the City offers an EnergyWise guidebook.
CEIP financing
Red Deer and Wood Buffalo are not on Alberta's residential CEIP list.

Red Deer's housing
Red Deer has 40,515 households. About 53% live in detached houses, 10% in row homes and 8% in semi-detached homes, and 1% in buildings of five or more storeys. Owners are 65% and renters 35%. About 34% of homes were built before 1981.
The thermostat rebate in practice
The $50 comes from the City, and it asks for a City of Red Deer utility account. One rebate per account, and not if you took part before. Read the qualifying list before you buy, because a thermostat that is not on it earns nothing. See our Red Deer thermostat page for the wiring check to do first.
Borrow before you buy
The library's thermal imaging camera and conservation toolkit are free. A walk through your house with a thermal camera shows where air leaks, which tells you whether to spend on sealing before equipment. It costs nothing and often changes the order of the jobs.
No CEIP here
Red Deer is not on the residential list for Alberta's CEIP, so a property-tax-bill loan is not available the way it is in Calgary or Edmonton. Your options for financing are ordinary bank products. Do not accept a quote that assumes CEIP.
Cold winters
Red Deer's average January low is -14.3°C, and the coldest day in our records reached -42.4°C. The City runs its own electric utility, so rebates here come from the City and not from ENMAX or EPCOR. The federal grant and loan have ended, and Alberta is outside the new federal affordability program.
