What Brandon homes look like
The 2021 Census counted 21,205 households in the City of Brandon.
- Owners. 61% own and 39% rent.
- Houses. 11,045 households (52%) live in single-detached houses. Another 1,600 live in row houses and 915 in semi-detached houses.
- Mobile homes. 1,135 households (5%) live in movable dwellings.
- Age. About 56% were built before 1981.
The median household total income was $76,000 in 2020, before tax, and about 29% of households earned under $50,000. 1,195 homes (6%) needed major repairs.
Question 1: what heats your home?
Efficiency Manitoba's heat pump rebate is for a heat pump that supplements an electric resistance or natural gas heating system. Homeowners converting from propane or fuel oil are also eligible. A wood-heated home is not on that list. If you qualify, the rebate is $2,000 for a centrally ducted cold climate air source heat pump and $1,500 for a ductless one. The heat pump cannot replace an existing heat pump, new homes are not eligible, and it must go in your primary residence. Your contractor files the application within 90 days. A rebate cheque is mailed, and a post-installation inspection may be needed.
Question 2: is your home a house or a mobile home?
The free and subsidized upgrades under the Energy Efficiency Assistance Program are for single-detached or semi-detached homes lived in year-round. That covers about 11,960 Brandon households (56%). Efficiency Manitoba's page names those two home types and does not mention mobile homes, so if you live in one of Brandon's 1,135 movable dwellings, ask before you plan around it. The insulation rebate is for a residence, rental property or cottage you own that has active Manitoba Hydro residential service.
Question 3: what is your household income?
The Energy Efficiency Assistance Program looks at total household income before deductions. The limits are $46,264 for one person, $57,595 for two, $70,806 for three, $85,968 for four, $97,504 for five, $109,967 for six and $122,432 for seven or more. Under the limit, ask about free upgrades before you buy anything. Over it, the regular rebates apply: $100 for each triple pane window or door, $50 for a smart thermostat (up to $150 in the first year with an eligible ecobee and Peak Partners), and insulation by the square foot with approval first.
Paying for it
You can use Manitoba Hydro's Home Energy Efficiency Loan along with the rebate. The rule to remember is to apply for the financing before you start any work, including buying products. Efficiency Manitoba also offers a ground source heat pump program as financing, not a rebate. Ottawa's National Heat Pump Rebate is expected in early 2027. See our National Heat Pump Rebate guide.
