How AEA rebates work
The Arctic Energy Alliance, a not-for-profit in Yellowknife, runs the home rebates. They are after-purchase mail-in rebates for the 2026/27 fiscal year, April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027. The AEA must receive your application within 3 months of the purchase date on your receipt. A household can get up to two rebates on the same type of product each year, with exceptions for thermostats, ECM pumps, LED lighting and plug-in controllers. Rebates are the same in hydro and non-hydro communities except for LED lighting, and you no longer need to buy in the NWT to get the full amount. Rebates are no longer available on heating systems that use fossil fuels. The main office is at 101-5102 51st Street, Yellowknife, 867-920-3333, toll free 1-877-755-5855. Our Northwest Territories rebate calculator adds up only what is open.
Insulation rebates
The AEA pays for insulating your home, claimed on its Residential Insulation Rebate Application Form:
| Part of the home | Rebate |
|---|---|
| Exterior walls | Up to $8,000 |
| Ceiling | Up to $1,500 |
| Exposed floor | $500 |
| Basement | Up to $2,500 |
| Basement header | $625 |
| Crawlspace | Up to $2,000 |
We did not read the AEA's guidelines for how the amounts are worked out by area, so ask the AEA before you plan a job around the top figures.
Stoves, thermostats, pumps and appliances
The AEA pays 50% of the purchase cost, up to $2,000, for a wood stove or a wood pellet stove. The cost does not include installation or accessories. Other products: a programmable thermostat pays 50% up to $150 (up to 5 a year for an individual), an ECM pump 50% up to $500, an automated vehicle plug-in controller 50% up to $150, and a drain water heat recovery system with at least 30% efficiency pays $700. Washers pay $200, ventless dryers $500, and an all-in-one washer and ventless dryer $750.
Solar, biomass and ground-source heat pumps
The AEA's Renewable Energy program funds solar, wind, wood pellet heating, biofuel and ground-source heat pumps. Residents can get up to $30,000 for biomass-fueled heating systems such as wood-pellet boilers, and up to $20,000 for other projects such as solar panels. The rebate is the lower of 50% of eligible costs and a savings calculation. For solar electric, the calculation is $4.00 per watt. Funding is first come, first served, needs pre-approval, and the AEA asks you to contact them before you apply. It can no longer fund grid-connected renewable electricity in communities that use hydroelectricity.
What we did not find
We found no Arctic Energy Alliance rebate for air-source heat pumps on its Energy-Efficient Products or Renewable Energy pages. That is a negative result, not proof that none exists. The AEA's news list includes a June 9, 2026 study of how well heat pumps work in Yellowknife, and Ottawa's National Heat Pump Rebate is expected in early 2027, so check both. See our National Heat Pump Rebate guide.
