Is There an Ontario Rebate for a New Furnace? (2026)

Updated October 26, 2026. Written by Sam Menard.

Short answer: No. There is no Ontario rebate for a new gas furnace in 2026. The Home Renovation Savings Program (run by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy) pays for cold-climate heat pumps instead. If your home heats with Enbridge gas, you can get $500 per ton, up to $2,000. If you heat with electricity, oil, propane or wood, it's $1,250 per ton, up to $7,500. You must be pre-approved before the install.

Should you replace your furnace or switch to a heat pump?

It depends on your furnace's age, your fuel, and your income. Find the row that sounds like you:

Ontario gas furnace rebate: why there isn't one anymore

Ontario's home rebates used to include high-efficiency gas furnaces. They don't now. Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy merged their offers into one program, Home Renovation Savings, and it pays $0 for a gas furnace, new or replacement. The money moved to cold-climate heat pumps, insulation, windows and smart thermostats. A heat pump heats and cools, so it can replace both a furnace and an air conditioner. We re-read the program's home page and heat pump page on October 26, 2026. A furnace is not on either one (see every Home Renovation Savings rebate and Enbridge Gas rebates). If a contractor quotes you an "Enbridge furnace rebate" in 2026, ask them to show you the program page. It is most likely an old offer or a store discount.

Gas furnace vs heat pump: what the rebate changes

Say your home heats with Enbridge gas and you need about 3 tons of heating. A new furnace gets no rebate. A cold-climate heat pump gets $500 per ton, so $1,500, and a 4-ton system reaches the $2,000 cap. If you heat with oil, propane or baseboard heaters, the same 3-ton heat pump gets $1,250 per ton, or $3,750, and a 6-ton system reaches the $7,500 cap. That is why the honest answer depends on your fuel. For gas homes the rebate helps, but it may not close the price gap on its own. For oil, propane and electric homes it usually does.

Many gas homes split the difference. They keep a working furnace as backup and add a heat pump that does the cooling and most of the heating. You still get the $500 per ton.

Rules that trip people up

  • Pre-approval is required. Your contractor sends the first application before the install. A heat pump put in before approval gets nothing.
  • Use a participating contractor. Fill in the program's short form and it sends you the list.
  • The model must be on the list. Air source units must be on Natural Resources Canada's cold-climate qualified products list.
  • The owner applies. Landlords apply for rental homes. New homes lived in for six months or less don't qualify.
  • Cornwall Electric customers are not eligible unless they heat with Enbridge gas.
  • Payment: after the post-install application is approved, the cheque comes by mail within 60 days.

Furnace rebate in Markham, Toronto, Brampton and Vaughan

There is no Markham furnace rebate, and none in Toronto, Brampton or Vaughan either. The program's amounts are the same across Ontario. What changes by city is the extra help. Toronto homeowners can add the city's Home Energy Loan Program (HELP), repaid on the property tax bill, to cover what the rebate doesn't. Ottawa has the Better Homes Ottawa Loan, which works the same way. In Markham, Brampton and Vaughan, the Home Renovation Savings rebate is the main help, and each city page lists anything local we have verified. Before you sign a quote

  • Get at least two written quotes, and ask each installer to quote both a furnace and a heat pump.
  • Ask how they sized the system. A good installer does a heat-loss calculation, not a rule of thumb.
  • If you want a rebate, get pre-approval before the install. Most programs refuse claims for work already done.
  • Ask who files the rebate paperwork, and get it in writing.
