What Home Renovation Savings pays for a heat pump in Vaughan
We re-read the program's heat pump page and its requirements document on October 3, 2026. No home energy assessment is needed for this stream, but a participating HVAC contractor and written pre-approval are.
Air-source, electric, oil, propane or wood heat
For a cold-climate air-source heat pump replacing electric resistance, oil, propane or wood as the main heat. A 3-ton system pays $3,750 and 6 tons or more reaches the cap.
Air-source, Enbridge gas heat
For homes primarily heated by an Enbridge gas furnace or boiler. The cap is reached at 4 tons.
Ground-source
For electric, oil, propane or wood homes. Gas homes get a flat $3,000. The system must be a full installation sized to the home's load.
Rented heat pump
Rentals are eligible for any primary heating fuel: $500 per ton for air-source, up to $2,000, or a flat $3,000 for ground-source.
More than one outdoor unit
If several outdoor units are needed to heat the whole home, their tons add up and one rebate is paid on the total, for example 3 + 3 tons for $7,500.
One rebate, pre-approved
One rebate per home. The contractor needs written pre-approval before installing, files the post-installation application within 30 days, and the cheque arrives within 60 days of approval.

The requirements document lists no end date, but the program's other streams close in late 2026, so check the program page before you sign a contract. Pre-approval is mandatory: an installation done first earns nothing.
Who gets which rate
81% of Vaughan households live in an eligible house type. For a gas home, the rebate is $500 per ton, up to $2,000, for any sizing option from A to D. For a home on electric baseboards, oil, propane or wood, it is $1,250 per ton up to $7,500, with sizing options C and D only. About 20% of households live in homes built since 2011.
A heat pump for cooling first
Sizing option A is emphasis on cooling, with some heating in mild weather. It is available to gas and propane homes, and it suits an owner mainly replacing an air conditioner. The rebate rate is small, so the case for a heat pump rests on the saving over the air conditioner and the added efficiency, which the program does not guarantee.
Ductwork matters in a newer house
The ductwork connected to the heat pump must be properly sized and meet code. A newer Vaughan house may have ducts designed for a furnace airflow, so ask the contractor to check static pressure and duct sizing in the load calculation. The program requires the system to heat the whole conditioned space.
A realistic view
With a low major-repairs rate (2.5%) and a young stock, many Vaughan owners will pay most of the cost themselves. The most they can get is $2,000 on gas, so price the project as if the rebate were a bonus.
Choosing the sizing option
The NRCan sizing form asks the contractor to choose how the system is sized. A Vaughan gas home can choose any option from A to D, and the choice should match what you want the heat pump to do: cooling with some heating, or most of the heating over the season. Ask the contractor to explain which option the quote assumes and why, because it affects both comfort and cost.
How to claim in Vaughan
- Check your current heating fuel and the age of your furnace and ducts.
- Confirm eligibility on the program's short form and get the list of participating HVAC contractors.
- Choose a contractor from that list. Ask for a load calculation and the NRCan sizing tool form for each outdoor unit.
- Wait for written pre-approval before any installation starts.
- After the install, check that the contractor files the post-installation application within 30 days, with the final itemized invoice and photos.
