Questions about Vaughan, from the data behind this page. Tap an answer to see why.

1. Which utility's programs apply to our Vaughan rebate guide?

Alectra Utilities is the utility we use for Vaughan. Rebates often depend on who supplies your power or gas, so check yours first.

2. In January, Vaughan nights usually bottom out near:

Our weather sample for Vaughan (2015-2024) shows an average January low of -9 °C. Cold-climate heat pumps are tested at low temperatures, so check the rating at your coldest days, not just the average.

3. A solar panel in Vaughan sees about how many full-sun hours a day?

Our 2020-2024 sunshine sample for Vaughan averages about 3.8 peak sun hours a day. Fewer hours means less solar power per panel, so the size of the system matters.

We re-read the program's appliance page on October 4, 2026. The rebates are province-wide, so the amounts are the same in every city, and the rules about what you replace and which model you buy are what decide a claim.

The appliance page states no end date, so confirm it is still open before you buy.

Detached homes, bigger kitchens

65,040 Vaughan households live in detached houses. Whatever their age, the rebate asks for an existing electric appliance that needs replacing, not for a working one to be swapped early.

Alectra Utilities

Alectra Utilities supplies power and Vaughan postal codes begin with L, which the Energy Affordability Program lists for free fridges and freezers. The renter share is 14%, the lowest among our Toronto-area cities.

Buy new, then upload the receipt

Buy a new appliance from any retailer, then upload the receipt on the program page within 60 days of purchase. Used and refurbished units do not qualify. Keep the receipt, the model number and the delivery date together. Vaughan households who buy during a sale should still confirm the model is on the list at the time they check out.

What kind of home

Unlike the thermostat rebate, the appliance page lists no home type. It asks for a residential customer on the Ontario grid. It does not address condos or apartments directly, so a Vaughan condo owner or tenant should confirm with the program. 14% of Vaughan households rent, and a tenant should ask the landlord before swapping a fridge or range that came with the unit.

When replacing makes sense

About 8% of Vaughan's 103,910 households live in homes built before 1981. Age of the house tells you little about the age of the fridge, and a working appliance rarely pays back a swap through a $25 to $200 rebate alone. The rebate suits a replacement you already need to make.

Most Efficient, not just ENERGY STAR

The rebate is for ENERGY STAR Most Efficient models, which the page describes as going beyond standard ENERGY STAR requirements. A fridge with the ordinary ENERGY STAR mark may not qualify. Each appliance has its own product list linked from the program page, so find the model number there before you pay, whether you buy in Vaughan or online.

How to claim in Vaughan

  1. Check that the appliance you are replacing is electric and that you are on the Ontario grid.
  2. Find a new model on the program's ENERGY STAR Most Efficient list for that appliance.
  3. Buy it new from any retailer and keep the receipt.
  4. Upload the receipt on the program page within 60 days of purchase.
  5. If your household income is under the limits, call 1-844-770-3148 about free fridges and freezers first.
