Should You Wait for the Federal Heat Pump Rebate?

If you read the news this week, you may be asking whether to hold off on your heat pump. The honest answer depends on one thing: does your heating still work? Here is how to decide, with the deadlines that are real today.

Quick quiz

Quick quiz: how a heat pump works

Ten questions on the machine itself. Tap an answer to see why.

1. How does a heat pump heat your home?

A heat pump uses a refrigerant loop to carry heat in from outside air (or the ground). Moving heat takes far less energy than making it.

2. Can a heat pump heat a home when it is below freezing outside?

Cold-climate models are tested and rated for low temperatures. Always check the rated output at your coldest design temperature.

3. What does 'cold-climate' on a heat pump mean?

It is a performance rating, not a sales region. Many rebate programs ask for a cold-climate model on a qualified list.

4. For each unit of electricity it uses, a heat pump delivers about:

Because it moves heat instead of making it, a heat pump is often 200 to 400 percent efficient. Electric baseboards top out at 100 percent.

5. What is a ductless mini-split?

It needs no ductwork. Each indoor unit heats and cools the room it sits in, which suits homes without ducts.

6. Can a heat pump also cool your home in summer?

A reversing valve switches the direction of heat flow, so one system heats in winter and cools in summer.

7. What should an installer use to size a heat pump?

Square footage misses insulation, windows and air leaks. A proper heat-loss calculation avoids a unit that is too big or too small.

8. You see steam or frost on the outdoor unit in winter. What is usually happening?

Frost builds on the outdoor coil in cold, damp air. The unit briefly reverses to melt it, then goes back to heating.

9. About how long does a well-installed heat pump last?

Fifteen years is a common figure, longer with regular filter cleaning and yearly checks.

10. Why do some homes keep backup heat with a heat pump?

Right-sized cold-climate units handle most winter days. A small backup is a choice for the coldest extremes, not a sign the heat pump fails.

What Ottawa has promised, and what it has not

The National Heat Pump Rebate pays up to $10,000 for households below the median income and $2,000 for other eligible homeowners. The government expects to launch in early 2027. Ottawa's own Canada.ca page now says the retroactivity period starts on November 1, 2026. A household that meets the rules and installs an eligible heat pump from that date can apply once the portal opens. The page says nothing about installs before November 1, so do not count on those.

Our page on the National Heat Pump Rebate keeps every confirmed detail in one place, with the date we read each source.

A simple rule: does your heat still work?

The federal program is built for the moment a system breaks or nears the end of its life. The government cites data that most heating replacements happen after a breakdown. That gives you two cases.

  • Your system works and you are not in a hurry. Wait. You lose almost nothing by waiting a few months, and you will see the real income line, product list and rules before you spend money.
  • Your system has failed, or is failing this winter. Do not go without heat to chase a rebate that is not open. Price the install now and use the provincial money that is open today.

Provincial deadlines that are real today

Some provincial offers end soon, which is a reason not to wait.

  • BC Hydro heat pump bonus: up to $1,000 extra for installs completed, invoiced and paid between August 1 and October 31, 2026, with the application due by November 30, 2026. This sits on top of the BC Hydro rebate of up to $4,000 for a whole-home heat pump replacing electric heat. It is a narrow window, so book now if you are close.
  • Ontario Home Renovation Savings: the heat pump stream pays $1,250 per ton up to $7,500 for homes heated with electricity, oil, propane or wood, and $500 per ton up to $2,000 for gas homes. We found no end date for that stream, but you need written pre-approval before the work starts, so you cannot apply afterward.

Rules change, so confirm on the program page before you sign. Our BC and Ontario hubs list what each program pays and the date we last read it.

If you buy now, protect a possible federal claim

Ottawa says installs from November 1, 2026 can apply, and it will almost certainly ask for proof. Cheap steps now keep the door open.

  1. Keep the signed quote, final invoice and proof of payment.
  2. Photograph the old equipment and the new unit's nameplate with the model number.
  3. Choose a cold-climate model that is on your province's qualified list. A unit that meets a provincial list is the likeliest to also appear on the federal Eligible Products List, but that list is not published, so we cannot promise it.
  4. Do not pay extra for a promise from a contractor about a federal rebate. Nobody can promise it yet.

Under the announced process, you apply first, get approved in 24 hours, then install and upload receipts. If you install first, you are relying on Ottawa's retroactivity period, which starts on November 1, 2026. Full rules are promised as of that date.

How much is waiting worth?

A sample, with both programs paying in full, which no one has confirmed: an Ontario home on oil with a three-ton heat pump could get $3,750 from Home Renovation Savings ($1,250 times three tons). If the federal rebate stacks and the household is above the median, that adds $2,000 for $5,750. Below the median it adds up to $10,000 for $13,750. Waiting only helps if the federal money actually adds to the provincial money. Read the stacking rules in our province-by-province guide before you count on it.

Common questions

Will the federal heat pump rebate be retroactive?

Yes, for installs from November 1, 2026. Ottawa's Canada.ca page says its retroactivity period starts on that date. It says nothing about earlier installs.

I installed a heat pump this year. Can I claim?

It depends on when. Ottawa says installs from November 1, 2026 can apply once the portal opens in early 2027. It has said nothing about earlier installs. Keep every invoice and receipt, and watch the Canada.ca campaign page, where details are promised as of November 1.

Should I wait if my furnace is old but working?

Waiting a few months is low risk and lets you see the final rules. If it fails in winter, install and use the provincial rebates available now.

Does the BC Hydro bonus still apply?

Yes for installs completed, invoiced and paid by October 31, 2026, with the application due by November 30, 2026.

When will the federal portal open?

The government says early 2027 and has not given a date.
