What Home Renovation Savings pays for a heat pump in Markham
We re-read the program's heat pump page and its requirements document on October 3, 2026. No home energy assessment is needed for this stream, but a participating HVAC contractor and written pre-approval are.
Air-source, electric, oil, propane or wood heat
For a cold-climate air-source heat pump replacing electric resistance, oil, propane or wood as the main heat. A 3-ton system pays $3,750 and 6 tons or more reaches the cap.
Air-source, Enbridge gas heat
For homes primarily heated by an Enbridge gas furnace or boiler. The cap is reached at 4 tons.
Ground-source
For electric, oil, propane or wood homes. Gas homes get a flat $3,000. The system must be a full installation sized to the home's load.
Rented heat pump
Rentals are eligible for any primary heating fuel: $500 per ton for air-source, up to $2,000, or a flat $3,000 for ground-source.
More than one outdoor unit
If several outdoor units are needed to heat the whole home, their tons add up and one rebate is paid on the total, for example 3 + 3 tons for $7,500.
One rebate, pre-approved
One rebate per home. The contractor needs written pre-approval before installing, files the post-installation application within 30 days, and the cheque arrives within 60 days of approval.

The requirements document lists no end date, but the program's other streams close in late 2026, so check the program page before you sign a contract. Pre-approval is mandatory: an installation done first earns nothing.
Eligible homes
77% of Markham households live in an eligible house type, and 12,100 are owner-occupied detached houses built before 1981. About 21% live in homes built since 2011. A new build must be occupied six months before it qualifies. Markham has 16,100 row and 7,095 semi households.
Do the per-ton math with the right capacity
The program calculates the rebate on rated heating capacity at 8.3°C (47°F), where 12,000 BTU/h is one ton. A model sold as a 3-ton unit may be rated at a different heating capacity. Ask the contractor for the NRCan listing's capacity and divide by 12,000. A gas home with a 36,000 BTU/h rating gets $1,500, and an electric home $3,750.
Two outdoor units
If one unit cannot heat the whole home, up to three outdoor units can count toward a single rebate. The tonnage of all units is added. Two 3-ton units for an electric home reach the $7,500 cap. A 1-ton plus a 2-ton unit gives 3 tons, or $3,750 for an electric home and $1,500 for a gas home.
What happens at post-installation
The contractor has 30 days after installing to submit the final itemized invoice, photos of the installed equipment and the thermostat, and installation details. Approval brings the cheque within 60 days. Keep your own copy of the invoice and ask the contractor for the approval notice.
Backup heat and whole-home heating
The program requires the heat pump to be capable of distributing heat throughout the whole conditioned space, including the basement. Existing backup heat may stay, but it does not earn a rebate. A Markham owner with a mix of ducted and non-ducted spaces should ask the contractor to show in the load calculation which rooms each indoor unit serves.
How to claim in Markham
- Ask the contractor for the NRCan-listed rated capacity at 8.3C.
- Confirm eligibility on the program's short form and get the list of participating HVAC contractors.
- Choose a contractor from that list. Ask for a load calculation and the NRCan sizing tool form for each outdoor unit.
- Wait for written pre-approval before any installation starts.
- After the install, check that the contractor files the post-installation application within 30 days, with the final itemized invoice and photos.
