Questions about Markham, from the data behind this page. Tap an answer to see why.

1. Whose programs should a Markham homeowner check first?

Alectra Utilities is the utility we use for Markham. Rebates often depend on who supplies your power or gas, so check yours first.

2. What is a typical January night low in Markham?

Our weather sample for Markham (2015-2024) shows an average January low of -8 °C. Cold-climate heat pumps are tested at low temperatures, so check the rating at your coldest days, not just the average.

3. About what share of homes in Markham are rented?

The 2021 Census counts 20,320 renter households out of 110,870 in Markham. Many rebates go to owners, and some programs have separate rules for landlords and tenants.

What Ontario pays for a smart thermostat in Markham

We re-read the three program pages on October 4, 2026. The rebate is province-wide, so the amount is the same in every city, and the page that matters is the one that says whether your home and heating qualify.

Owners with central air

With 82% of households owning and only 18% renting, Markham is a place where the person who can claim a rebate is usually the person who pays the bill. Peak Perks fits homes with central air, and the first year of the two programs together could bring in $200 for a household that qualifies for both.

What the rebate does not need

The rebate page lists no smart meter or home hub requirement. It needs one of six brands in a listed model and a home that qualifies. Alectra Utilities is the local distributor and is not the source of the rebate. Peak Perks, from Save on Energy, is the only demand response step, and it needs central air.

Check your history first

The most common reason for a refusal is an earlier offer. If you ever received a thermostat, a discount or a rebate on one from Enbridge Gas, Save on Energy or Home Renovation Savings, the program treats this as a second claim. If you are not sure, look for old emails or ask the program before you buy.

Two ways to claim

Before you buy, press the program page's Get code button, receive a code by email and enter it at checkout on the Home Depot, Best Buy, Copeland Sensi, ecobee or Mysa website. After you buy, press Apply for rebate and upload the receipt within 60 days. Either way the thermostat has to be one of the listed models, and a Markham homeowner who buys in a store should keep the receipt.

The size of the saving

The rebate is a flat $125, so it takes the same amount off a cheap thermostat and an expensive one. It does not guarantee a lower bill. How much a smart thermostat changes your energy use depends on your schedule, your system and how you set it, and we have no program figure to quote for that.

How to claim in Markham

  1. Check that your home type, heating and cooling match the eligibility card, and that you have not had a thermostat offer before.
  2. Pick one of the listed models from ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Copeland Sensi, Mysa or Sinopé.
  3. Get a code from the program page and use it at checkout, or buy first and upload the receipt within 60 days.
  4. If you have central air, enroll the same thermostat in Peak Perks. Alectra Utilities is your local distributor, but Peak Perks is run by Save on Energy.
  5. If your household income is under the program limits, call 1-844-770-3148 before buying, since a free thermostat may be available.
