Safety note: Never wire a 24V thermostat like Ecobee or Nest to a 240V baseboard heater. It won't work, and it can damage the thermostat. Thick wires and a "240V" label mean line voltage. If you're not sure, turn off the breaker and ask an electrician.

Mysa vs Ecobee: which is better?

Verdict: Mysa for electric baseboards, Ecobee for a furnace or ducted heat pump.

This is the question most people search. The honest answer: they rarely compete for the same home. Mysa started as a baseboard thermostat. Ecobee is built for furnaces and ducted heat pumps. Here's how they line up.

• Pick Mysa if you have baseboards. Ecobee can't control them. A 4-room baseboard home needs about four Mysas, so price it per room.
• Pick Ecobee if you have a furnace or ducted heat pump and want room sensors to even out hot and cold spots. It needs a C-wire, and Ecobee includes an adapter if you don't have one.
• Furnace, but on a budget? Mysa for Central HVAC lists for less than any Ecobee. Then it's a true head-to-head: app, looks and price.

Mysa vs Nest: which is better?

Verdict: Mysa for baseboards, Nest for central heat if you use Google Home.

Same story as Ecobee. Nest is a 24V thermostat for furnaces and ducted systems. It can't run baseboards.

Ecobee rebate: what you can get, by utility

Ecobee rebates depend on where you live and how you heat. Here's what we could confirm on official pages. If your utility isn't listed, we didn't find an ecobee rebate there.

BC Hydro and Mysa: free thermostats this fall

• Peak Saver pays you each winter. $50 a season, or $100 if you're income-qualified. During peak events (four hours max, November to March), BC Hydro may lower your heat a couple of degrees. You can override any event. Skip more than half and you may lose that season's reward.
• Already own a Mysa? Enrolling an eligible baseboard model in Peak Saver earns a $100 one-time credit plus the $50 seasonal reward. That's the "up to $150" you may have seen. It's a bill credit, not money off the price.
• Furnace or ducted heat pump? An Ecobee or Nest doesn't qualify with BC Hydro. Pick on features, not rebates.
• FortisBC area? If FortisBC sends your electric bill, BC Hydro programs don't apply. Use FortisBC's offers instead.

Mysa vs Cielo (mini-splits)

Verdict: Mysa if you want a clean look and Apple Home. Cielo if you want a thermostat with buttons. Check your unit's own Wi-Fi adapter first.

Both control a ductless heat pump by sending the same signals as its remote.

• Looks: Mysa is a minimal white unit. Cielo's Breez Max looks more like a classic wall thermostat with buttons.
• Smart home: Mysa works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google and SmartThings, and its app has no subscription.
• Check first: Many heat pump brands sell their own Wi-Fi adapter. It talks to the unit directly and can show more detail. Ask your installer before you buy either.

Mysa vs Hilo (Quebec)

This isn't really a choice between two thermostats. Hilo is a service from Hydro-Québec, and Mysa works with it. Hilo pairs with Hydro-Québec's Rate Flex D. You pay less for power most of the winter, but more during peak demand events. During those events, Hilo turns your connected devices down for you.

• Who can use it: Hydro-Québec customers only. Outside Quebec, Hilo doesn't apply.
• Hardware: it starts with the Hilo hub. You can use Hilo's own products or connect compatible Mysa, Sinopé or Honeywell Home thermostats.
• The bonus: Hilo pays up to $210 per connected device, enough to cover up to the full price after manufacturer discounts. You must connect all your eligible devices and agree to 12 months of automatic peak-event control. It's paid once per device, the number of devices is limited, and the offer can change without notice.
• Savings: Hilo says its customers save $150 per winter on average, and up to 20% of the winter bill.

So if you're in Quebec with baseboards and want Mysa, check Hilo's compatible devices list before you buy. Buying a listed Mysa model and connecting it to Hilo can earn the bonus. Checked October 3, 2026.

Mysa vs Hoot (baseboards)

Verdict: Mysa in BC, because Hoot is not on BC Hydro's Peak Saver thermostat list.

KING's Hoot is a Wi-Fi baseboard thermostat for 120V, 208V and 240V heaters. Check your wiring against the model's specs before you buy. In BC there's one big difference: Hoot isn't on BC Hydro's Peak Saver thermostat list. Mysa and Sinopé are. That list is what earns the $100 sign-up credit and $50 yearly reward.

When a smart thermostat isn't worth it

BC Hydro says smart thermostats cut the electricity used for space heating by about 9% on average, and up to $150 a year when they run baseboards well. That's real money. But be honest with yourself:

• You already keep the heat low and steady. A thermostat saves money by turning heat down when you're away or asleep. If you already do that by hand, savings are small.
• You're about to replace baseboards with a heat pump. Don't buy five baseboard thermostats you'll pull off the wall next year. In BC, take the free ones instead.
• You rent. Ask your landlord first. Rebates usually need the account holder.

The bigger win for baseboard homes is a ductless heat pump. It often uses half the electricity or less for the same heat, and adds air conditioning.
