The offer at a glance
We read BC Hydro's free smart thermostat page, its Peak Saver device page and the Province's July 6, 2026 news release on October 11, 2026. Ordering is open. For every thermostat offer in BC, including FortisBC's, see smart thermostat rebates in BC.
Free smart thermostats
Mysa or Sinopé baseboard (line-voltage) models. BC Hydro values up to five at $600. Free shipping. You order from Mysa or Sinopé through BC Hydro's page, signed in to MyHydro.
Peak Saver reward
You enroll during checkout. A few times a winter BC Hydro turns your heat down one to three degrees for up to four hours. You can override any event. The reward is per household, paid as a bill credit after the winter.
Already own a baseboard smart thermostat?
Enroll a Mysa or Sinopé baseboard thermostat you bought yourself for a one-time $100 bill credit, then $50 each winter. The $100 is not paid on the free thermostats.
Who can get free thermostats
The offer is for BC Hydro residential customers with a MyHydro account whose homes are heated by electric baseboards. The thermostats must go in at the address on that account. Renters can order with the landlord's permission. BC Hydro says homes with a heat pump can't order. Mysa and Sinopé baseboard thermostats are line-voltage thermostats. They switch the 120V or 240V power that runs a baseboard heater.
The Province says the program is meant to reach condos and apartments too. Renters and condo owners with baseboards have had few ways to join Peak Saver before. About 800,000 BC homes, more than 40%, heat with electricity.
It is not for a furnace or a ducted heat pump. Ecobee, Nest and other 24V thermostats can't run baseboards, and BC Hydro doesn't give them away. It is also not for FortisBC electric customers in places like Kelowna and Penticton. FortisBC has its own connected-thermostat rebate for electric central heat.
When you can order
Ordering opened this fall. On BC Hydro's free smart thermostat page, pick a brand and order. BC Hydro says Sinopé fits two-wire setups and Mysa fits four-wire setups (two pairs), and both brands have a compatibility checker. Shipping is free, and you enroll in Peak Saver during checkout. Enrollment is required.
You install them yourself or hire an electrician. BC Hydro calls a hardwired thermostat regulated electrical work and says to check with Technical Safety BC about permits. Line-voltage wiring carries full house voltage, so if you are not sure, hire an electrician.
Mysa or Sinopé: which to pick
Both are Canadian and both make baseboard models that work with Peak Saver. Mysa is the better-known app, with Apple Home, Alexa and Google support, and a minimal look. Sinopé says its newest and most advanced baseboard thermostat is the one in this program. Check the amperage (load) of each heater against the model before you order. A large baseboard on one thermostat can exceed what a model handles.
For a deeper side-by-side, see our Mysa vs Ecobee vs Nest comparison, which also covers which thermostat fits which kind of heat.
Is it worth it?
For a baseboard home, yes. The thermostats are free, they let you heat only the rooms you use, and BC Hydro pays you $50 each winter to let it trim your heat during a few peak events.
The catch is control. During a peak event your heat drops one to three degrees for up to four hours. You can override any event, but BC Hydro says if you opt out of more than half the events in a season you may lose that season's reward. The Province's July release mentioned $100 for income-qualified customers. BC Hydro's order page lists $50 per household and does not mention a higher amount.
Other BC Hydro offers this winter
BC Hydro also brought back appliance rebates on October 2, 2026: up to $200 on ENERGY STAR washers, dryers, fridges and laundry centres until January 8, 2027, and $25 on air fryers. If you are ready to replace baseboards entirely, a heat pump that replaces electric heat gets up to $4,000. See every BC Hydro rebate in one table and Peak Saver, explained.

Common questions
Is the BC Hydro free thermostat available now?
Yes. As of October 11, 2026, BC Hydro's page lets eligible baseboard-heated customers order up to five Mysa or Sinopé thermostats.
How many free thermostats can I get from BC Hydro?
Up to five per home, from Mysa or Sinopé. BC Hydro values them at $600.
Can I get a free Ecobee or Nest from BC Hydro?
No. The free thermostats are line-voltage models for electric baseboards. Ecobee and Nest are for furnaces and ducted heat pumps, and BC Hydro does not rebate them.
How much does Peak Saver pay for a thermostat?
Free thermostats earn $50 per household each winter, with no enrollment bonus. If you enroll a Mysa or Sinopé baseboard thermostat you already own, Peak Saver pays $100 once plus $50 each winter.
Do I have to let BC Hydro control my heat?
During a few peak events each winter, BC Hydro may lower your heat by one to three degrees for up to four hours. You can override any event, but skipping more than half of them can cost you the season's reward.
