Free install or $45 off?

If your home has electric heat and old dial or non-programmable thermostats, book the free installation first. It costs nothing and a contractor does the wiring. If you already have programmable thermostats, or you want to pick your own model, use the $45 instant rebate. Either way, the offer is for electric heat. An oil furnace or a heat pump with its own controller doesn't qualify.

Who qualifies for the free installation

Efficiency Nova Scotia's Free Product Installation is open to electrically heated homes in Nova Scotia that are on a residential power rate and used as a home. Your existing thermostat needs to be analog or non-programmable. A contractor visits, installs the smart thermostat and shows you how to use it. During the visit they will also check whether you qualify for other free items, such as faucet aerators, water-saving showerheads, motion sensors and bathroom fan humidity sensors.

If you rent, check the eligibility questions when you book, and get your landlord's okay before a contractor changes any wiring.

Why electric heat matters in Halifax

Nova Scotia Power charges 19.128 cents per kWh, plus a $20.08 monthly base charge. Efficiency Nova Scotia says heating is the biggest energy expense for most Nova Scotia homes, so a thermostat that turns the heat down when you sleep or go out saves real money. Efficiency Nova Scotia says a smart thermostat saves an average of 12% on heating and cooling costs, and that lowering the heat 2°C at night could save up to $150 a year.

Halifax has many households where this applies. About 68,750 households, 36% of the municipality, live in apartment buildings according to Statistics Canada's 2021 Census, and 42% of all households rent. If your apartment has electric baseboards and old dial thermostats, the free installation is worth checking.

Picking a thermostat for baseboards

Baseboard heaters run on line voltage (120V or 240V). They need a line-voltage smart thermostat, such as Mysa or Sinopé. Ecobee and Nest are low-voltage (24V) thermostats for furnaces and ducted heat pumps, and they can't run baseboards. Check each heater's wattage against the thermostat's limit. For a deeper comparison, see our Mysa vs Ecobee vs Nest guide.

How to get a smart thermostat in Halifax

  1. Confirm your home is heated by electricity and you are on a residential Nova Scotia Power rate.
  2. If your current thermostats are dial or non-programmable, book Efficiency Nova Scotia's Free Product Installation.
  3. Otherwise, buy a line-voltage smart thermostat from a participating retailer, or getmysa.com, and take $45 off.
  4. Set a lower temperature for sleep and time away. That is where the savings come from.
