Quick quiz: smart thermostat in Toronto

Questions about Toronto, from the data behind this page. Tap an answer to see why.

1. Which utility's programs apply to our Toronto rebate guide?

Toronto Hydro is the utility we use for Toronto. Rebates often depend on who supplies your power or gas, so check yours first.

2. On average, how low does the temperature fall in Toronto in January?

Our weather sample for Toronto (2015-2024) shows an average January low of -7 °C. Cold-climate heat pumps are tested at low temperatures, so check the rating at your coldest days, not just the average.

3. Renters make up what share of Toronto households?

The 2021 Census counts 557,970 renter households out of 1,160,895 in Toronto. Many rebates go to owners, and some programs have separate rules for landlords and tenants.

Towers, houses and the gap between them

47% of Toronto households live in an apartment building of five or more storeys, and only 23% in a detached house. The $125 rebate was written for houses, semis, row homes, townhomes and mobile homes. A tower resident has no claim on it, and Peak Perks excludes high-rise buildings that run full-building central air from a plant. Ask your landlord or condo board which programs apply to the building.

Toronto Hydro and the account in your name

Toronto Hydro bills most of the city. The Energy Affordability Program asks that the applicant be the primary or secondary account holder, so a renter whose electricity is on their own Toronto Hydro bill can apply on their own, while one whose power is included in the rent should ask the landlord. About 48% of Toronto households rent, the highest share among the 25 cities on this site.

Who here can claim the $125

The program pays for single detached, semi-detached, row, townhome and mobile homes on a permanent foundation. In Toronto about 35% of 1,160,895 households live in one of those. If yours is an apartment or a duplex unit, this rebate is not written for you, and the Energy Affordability Program is the route to ask about.

Adding Peak Perks

Peak Perks pays a $75 virtual prepaid Mastercard when you enroll and $20 a year after. It needs central air conditioning, or a heat pump that is part of central air, run by an eligible Wi-Fi thermostat from ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Emerson, Trane or Alarm.com. On hot weekday afternoons the utility can adjust the setting by up to 2 degrees Celsius for no more than three hours, and you can opt out during an event. With the $125, a first year could bring in $200, though Peak Perks cannot be combined with other Ontario demand response programs.

The free route

The Energy Affordability Program covers postal codes beginning K, L, M, N and P, which includes Toronto. Income limits for comprehensive support run from $48,220 for one person to $96,439 for four and $107,823 for five or more. Owners and renters who hold the utility account can apply, by phone at 1-844-770-3148 or online. The program says it is fully funded and accepting applications.

If your home heats with an Enbridge gas furnace or boiler, also look at Enbridge's Home Winterproofing Program. It gives free insulation and draft proofing, and anyone who gets one of those can also get a smart thermostat installed. The before-tax income limits run from $48,220 for one person up to $127,576 for seven or more, and people on programs such as Ontario Works or the Guaranteed Income Supplement can qualify too. Apply online or call 1-844-770-3148. If your home heats with electricity, apply to the Energy Affordability Program instead.

How to claim in Toronto

  1. Check that your home type, heating and cooling match the eligibility card, and that you have not had a thermostat offer before.
  2. Pick one of the listed models from ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Copeland Sensi, Mysa or Sinopé.
  3. Get a code from the program page and use it at checkout, or buy first and upload the receipt within 60 days.
  4. If you have central air, enroll the same thermostat in Peak Perks. Toronto Hydro is your local distributor, but Peak Perks is run by Save on Energy.
  5. If your household income is under the program limits, call 1-844-770-3148 before buying, since a free thermostat may be available.

Common questions

Can I claim the $125 in a Toronto condo?

The rebate page lists single and semi-detached homes, rows, townhomes and mobile homes, so a condo apartment is not covered. Check the page for any change.

Does Toronto Hydro run its own thermostat program?

We did not find one on the pages we read. Peak Perks is run by Save on Energy and is open to customers of any Ontario distributor, with the exclusions listed above.

Which Toronto households can get a free thermostat?

Those under the Energy Affordability Program income limits, for example $48,220 for one person or $96,439 for four, in postal codes beginning M.

Is the rebate per person or per home?

Per household, and only if no earlier thermostat offer was received from Enbridge, Save on Energy or Home Renovation Savings.
