What Home Renovation Savings pays for a heat pump water heater in Guelph

We re-read the program's page and its eligibility requirements on October 3, 2026. There is no stand-alone water heater rebate in Ontario's program. The $500 comes with an assessment and at least one other upgrade.

Set by your heating fuel

$10,000 for homes heated by electricity, oil, propane or wood and $5,000 for Enbridge gas homes, across all measures.

The post-audit must be scheduled by November 30, 2026 and completed by December 31, 2026, or within 180 days of your first assessment, whichever comes first.

Guelph homes

69% of households live in an eligible house type. 44% live in homes built before 1981 and 10,940 are owner-occupied detached houses of that age. 12% live in tall apartments and 14% in low-rise buildings, which are excluded.

Alectra

Ask Alectra whether it has any conservation offers on your bill, and ask your advisor whether they can be combined with the program. The $500 rebate comes from Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy.

A simple bundle

A Guelph house could pair the water heater with attic insulation and air sealing for three measures and the $500 bonus.

What the first assessment is

The first assessment is an EnerGuide home energy evaluation done by a registered energy advisor licensed by Natural Resources Canada, working for an authorized service organization. It must happen before any work, and the program recommends using the same advisor for the follow-up. After it you receive a report of recommended upgrades, from which you choose at least two to complete.

Earlier rebates and a second round

If you received, or expect to receive, a rebate for the same equipment from an earlier Enbridge or IESO program, you cannot be paid twice for it. A household that completes the assessment stream can apply again with new assessments, but the $600 audit rebate is paid only once and the total across rounds is capped at $5,000 for gas homes and $10,000 for others.

Space heating is a separate stream

If you also want a heat pump to heat the home, that is a different stream with no assessment, its own contractor list and its own pre-approval, with rebates of $500 or $1,250 per ton depending on your current fuel. The water heater rebate here is separate from it, so plan the two projects on their own timelines.

When the house has tenants or a suite

The program requires you to own the home, and where an owner has tenants the owner must apply. In Guelph, 34% of households rent. A house built as a single dwelling that later gained a secondary suite is eligible if the audit covers the whole home and a central heating system serves it. A house built as a multi-family dwelling is not eligible.

The calendar, in order

Sequence the steps: first assessment, then installation, then follow-up. The post-audit has to be scheduled by November 30, 2026 and completed by December 31, 2026, or within 180 days of the first assessment, whichever comes first. A water heater can be installed in a day, but the follow-up visit depends on the advisor's calendar, so book both early.

How to claim in Guelph

  1. Check the tank you have and your main heating fuel.
  2. Book the first home energy assessment with a registered energy advisor before any work starts.
  3. Choose at least one more upgrade to pair with the water heater, such as insulation, windows or air sealing.
  4. Choose an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heater from NRCan's list and have a licensed, trained professional install it.
  5. Keep invoices and your property tax bill, and book the follow-up assessment before the December 31, 2026 deadline.

Questions about Guelph, from the data behind this page. Tap an answer to see why.

1. Whose programs should a Guelph homeowner check first?

Alectra Utilities (formerly Guelph Hydro) is the utility we use for Guelph. Rebates often depend on who supplies your power or gas, so check yours first.

2. On average, how low does the temperature fall in Guelph in January?

Our weather sample for Guelph (2015-2024) shows an average January low of -9 °C. Cold-climate heat pumps are tested at low temperatures, so check the rating at your coldest days, not just the average.

3. Out of 100 homes in Guelph, about how many are rented?

The 2021 Census counts 19,380 renter households out of 56,480 in Guelph. Many rebates go to owners, and some programs have separate rules for landlords and tenants.
