What Ontario pays for a smart thermostat in Guelph

We re-read the three program pages on October 4, 2026. The rebate is province-wide, so the amount is the same in every city, and the page that matters is the one that says whether your home and heating qualify.

Where the rebate reaches in Guelph

49% of Guelph households live in a detached house and 12% in buildings of five or more storeys. Renters make up 34% of households. A tenant in a house can read the page and see that it does not say owners only, though the landlord's say matters for the thermostat on the wall.

Alectra Utilities and the free route

Alectra Utilities is the distributor, and Guelph postal codes begin with N. The Energy Affordability Program lists both owners and renters as eligible if they hold the utility account, with income limits running from $48,220 for one person to $96,439 for four.

If you rent

The rebate page does not say owners only. It asks that you live in an eligible home type and that either gas or electric heating or cooling applies. In Guelph, 34% of households rent. A tenant should still get the landlord's agreement before replacing the thermostat on the wall and should ask whether it goes back when they leave.

Six brands, specific models

The rebate covers ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Copeland Sensi, Mysa and Sinopé, and only the model numbers the program page lists for each. A thermostat from the same brand that is not on the list earns nothing, so match the box to the page before you pay. Check that your furnace or heat pump works with the model as well, which the maker's compatibility checker will tell you.

The size of the saving

The rebate is a flat $125, so it takes the same amount off a cheap thermostat and an expensive one. It does not guarantee a lower bill. How much a smart thermostat changes your energy use depends on your schedule, your system and how you set it, and we have no program figure to quote for that.

How to claim in Guelph

  1. Check that your home type, heating and cooling match the eligibility card, and that you have not had a thermostat offer before.
  2. Pick one of the listed models from ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Copeland Sensi, Mysa or Sinopé.
  3. Get a code from the program page and use it at checkout, or buy first and upload the receipt within 60 days.
  4. If you have central air, enroll the same thermostat in Peak Perks. Alectra Utilities is your local distributor, but Peak Perks is run by Save on Energy.
  5. If your household income is under the program limits, call 1-844-770-3148 before buying, since a free thermostat may be available.
