What the Home Renovation Savings program pays for windows and doors in Guelph

We re-read the program's page and its eligibility requirements on October 3, 2026. Windows and doors are paid only inside the assessment stream, so every amount here comes with an assessment and at least two upgrades.

Open

Windows and doors

$100 per rough opening

One payment per opening in an outside wall, not per unit. A bay window with three panes in one opening earns $100.

Single-family homes
Open

Smallest qualifying job

3 windows, or 1 door

Three window openings, or one door, sliding door or skylight opening, count as one qualified measure. Two windows alone earn nothing.

Single-family homes
Open

Home energy assessment

Refunded on completion

$600 comes back when the program is completed. Covers the cost of the first and the follow-up assessment once the program is completed.

Open

Three or more upgrades

+$500 bonus

Windows count as one upgrade. Insulation, air sealing and a heat pump water heater are the others in this stream.

Program cap

Set by your heating fuel

$10,000 for homes heated by electricity, oil, propane or wood, and $5,000 for homes heated by Enbridge gas.

The program is run by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy. Post-audits must be scheduled by November 30, 2026 and completed by December 31, 2026, or within 180 days of your first assessment, whichever comes first.

Guelph's housing

The 2021 Census counts 10,940 owner-occupied detached houses built before 1981 in Guelph. 49% of households live in detached houses and 69% in an eligible house type. 12% live in buildings of five or more storeys and 14% in smaller apartment buildings. Neither is eligible for the program. Major repairs were reported by 4.7%.

Alectra and Guelph

Guelph's electric utility is Alectra Utilities, which took over Guelph Hydro. The window rebate does not depend on the electric utility, but ask Alectra whether it runs any conservation offers, and ask your advisor whether they can be combined with this program before you commit to a bundle.

Windows in a bundle

Windows count as one measure regardless of how many openings. Pair them with a larger measure such as insulation to reach the two-measure minimum. If you then add air sealing or a heat pump water heater, you reach three and the $500 bonus applies. Air sealing needs the house to reach an air tightness target, so the program suggests doing it third or later.

Winter timing

The January average low is -9.3°C and the record low from 2015 to 2024 was -30.8°C. Window installation in a cold month is possible, but ask the installer how they protect the opening during the swap. Booking before the November 30 audit-scheduling deadline matters more than the weather.

A checklist for installer quotes

Before you accept a Guelph quote, confirm four things in writing: the model is ENERGY STAR certified, the unit comes with its frame, the quote counts rough openings and the installer is a professional contractor. A quote missing any of these may fail the program's rules, and the rebate only comes after the follow-up assessment, so a mistake found late costs you the $100 per opening you were counting on.

What the audits cost and return

The program pays $600 back to offset the cost of the initial and the follow-up assessments, once you complete it. The assessment price is set by the service organization, so ask what it charges. Treat the $600 as a refund. If the audit cost is higher than $600, the difference is yours, and it should be weighed against the rebates you expect.

How to claim in Guelph

  1. Confirm you own the home, it has been occupied for six months and it is one of the eligible house types.
  2. Book the first home energy assessment with a registered energy advisor before any work starts.
  3. Choose at least one more upgrade to pair with the windows, and get quotes that count rough openings the way the program does.
  4. Ask Alectra whether any local offers can be combined with the program.
  5. Have a professional install complete windows or doors with frames, keep the ENERGY STAR labels on until the follow-up assessment, and book it.
