The requirements document lists no end date, but the program's other streams close in late 2026, so check the program page before you sign a contract. Pre-approval is mandatory: an installation done first earns nothing.

Oshawa housing

The 2021 Census counts 16,595 owner-occupied detached houses built before 1981 in Oshawa, 74% of households in an eligible type and 64% owning. 6.3% report needing major repairs. Oshawa has 5,360 semi-detached and 6,490 row households.

Utility does not set the rebate

Oshawa is served by Oshawa Power (Oshawa PUC Networks), not Elexicon. The program is open to homes connected to the Ontario grid through any local utility, apart from Cornwall Electric. What matters for the rebate is your primary heating fuel before the install.

Electric resistance and wood

An electrically heated home qualifies if its primary heating equipment is electric resistance, such as baseboards, and a wood-heated home qualifies on photos of its stove. Both can keep the old system as backup. Neither backup is rebated. Photos of baseboards are needed in at least three areas.

Timing and approval

No installation can begin until the program has approved the pre-installation application in writing. An Oshawa owner who accepts a quote and lets the crew start before approval loses the rebate. Ask the contractor for a written start date that follows the approval.

Wood-heated homes

An Oshawa home heated mainly by wood qualifies at the $1,250-per-ton rate, with sizing options C and D only, and the wood stove may stay as backup. The pre-installation photos must show the stove. The program counts the stove as the primary heating equipment only if that is how the home is actually heated, so be honest in the application.

Post-installation paperwork

The contractor files within 30 days of installation, with the final itemized invoice, photos of the equipment and thermostat, and measure details. The cheque arrives within 60 days of approval. Ask for copies of both applications.

How to claim in Oshawa

  1. Find out your main fuel and ask for the approval before any work starts.
  2. Confirm eligibility on the program's short form and get the list of participating HVAC contractors.
  3. Choose a contractor from that list. Ask for a load calculation and the NRCan sizing tool form for each outdoor unit.
  4. Wait for written pre-approval before any installation starts.
  5. After the install, check that the contractor files the post-installation application within 30 days, with the final itemized invoice and photos.
