A mix of owners and renters

About 64% of Oshawa households own. Tenants in a house, semi or townhome can read the program page and see that it does not say owners only. The landlord's agreement still matters before a thermostat is swapped, since the new one stays with the building unless you agree otherwise.

Oshawa Power

Oshawa Power supplies electricity here, and Oshawa postal codes begin with L, which the Energy Affordability Program lists. The coldest day in our records was -24.8°C and the January low averages -7.4°C.

Who here can claim the $125

The program pays for single detached, semi-detached, row, townhome and mobile homes on a permanent foundation. In Oshawa about 74% of 66,635 households live in one of those. If yours is an apartment or a duplex unit, this rebate is not written for you, and the Energy Affordability Program is the route to ask about.

The free route

The Energy Affordability Program covers postal codes beginning K, L, M, N and P, which includes Oshawa. Income limits for comprehensive support run from $48,220 for one person to $96,439 for four and $107,823 for five or more. Owners and renters who hold the utility account can apply, by phone at 1-844-770-3148 or online. The program says it is fully funded and accepting applications.

If your home heats with an Enbridge gas furnace or boiler, also look at Enbridge's Home Winterproofing Program. It gives free insulation and draft proofing, and anyone who gets one of those can also get a smart thermostat installed. The before-tax income limits run from $48,220 for one person up to $127,576 for seven or more, and people on programs such as Ontario Works or the Guaranteed Income Supplement can qualify too. Apply online or call 1-844-770-3148. If your home heats with electricity, apply to the Energy Affordability Program instead.

The size of the saving

The rebate is a flat $125, so it takes the same amount off a cheap thermostat and an expensive one. It does not guarantee a lower bill. How much a smart thermostat changes your energy use depends on your schedule, your system and how you set it, and we have no program figure to quote for that.

How to claim in Oshawa

  1. Check that your home type, heating and cooling match the eligibility card, and that you have not had a thermostat offer before.
  2. Pick one of the listed models from ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Copeland Sensi, Mysa or Sinopé.
  3. Get a code from the program page and use it at checkout, or buy first and upload the receipt within 60 days.
  4. If you have central air, enroll the same thermostat in Peak Perks. Oshawa Power is your local distributor, but Peak Perks is run by Save on Energy.
  5. If your household income is under the program limits, call 1-844-770-3148 before buying, since a free thermostat may be available.
