Mixed ownership

63% of Windsor households own and 37% rent, with 60% in detached houses. The page does not say owners only, and a tenant should clear a swap with the landlord.

Enwin Utilities

Enwin Utilities supplies electricity and Windsor postal codes begin with N, which the Energy Affordability Program lists for free fridges and freezers under its income limits.

Adding up the six

The six rebates are $200 for a heat pump dryer, $150 for an induction cooktop or range, $75 for a washer, $50 each for a fridge and a freezer and $25 for a dishwasher. A household that replaced all six would receive $550, though few Windsor homes will need to swap everything at once. The rebate is flat, so it takes the same amount off an entry model and a premium one.

Replace, do not add

The program page asks for an existing electric appliance in need of replacing. A new fridge to go in a spare corner, or an induction range where the kitchen had no range, is not a replacement. If you are switching from gas to an electric appliance, the page does not say whether that counts, so ask the program before you buy. Windsor households that already cook on an electric range are the clearest fit for the induction rebate.

When replacing makes sense

About 68% of Windsor's 94,275 households live in homes built before 1981. Age of the house tells you little about the age of the fridge, and a working appliance rarely pays back a swap through a $25 to $200 rebate alone. The rebate suits a replacement you already need to make.

Most Efficient, not just ENERGY STAR

The rebate is for ENERGY STAR Most Efficient models, which the page describes as going beyond standard ENERGY STAR requirements. A fridge with the ordinary ENERGY STAR mark may not qualify. Each appliance has its own product list linked from the program page, so find the model number there before you pay, whether you buy in Windsor or online.

How to claim in Windsor

  1. Check that the appliance you are replacing is electric and that you are on the Ontario grid.
  2. Find a new model on the program's ENERGY STAR Most Efficient list for that appliance.
  3. Buy it new from any retailer and keep the receipt.
  4. Upload the receipt on the program page within 60 days of purchase.
  5. If your household income is under the limits, call 1-844-770-3148 about free fridges and freezers first.
