What Ontario pays for a smart thermostat in Peterborough

We re-read the three program pages on October 4, 2026. The rebate is province-wide, so the amount is the same in every city, and the page that matters is the one that says whether your home and heating qualify.

Cornwall Electric customers cannot join the rebate or Peak Perks.

The rebate page states no end date, so confirm it is still open before you buy.

Winters and the thermostat

The average January low is -11.4°C and the coldest day in our records reached -31.2°C. In a city with winters like this, the heating test on the rebate page is the one that decides eligibility. Gas heat through Enbridge, or electric heat or cooling, qualifies. The page does not mention oil, propane or wood.

Hydro One

Hydro One supplies electricity in Peterborough; it took over Peterborough Distribution in 2020. Peterborough postal codes begin with K, which the Energy Affordability Program lists, and renters who hold the account can apply. 68% of households live in an eligible house type for the $125 rebate.

If you rent

The rebate page does not say owners only. It asks that you live in an eligible home type and that either gas or electric heating or cooling applies. In Peterborough, 41% of households rent. A tenant should still get the landlord's agreement before replacing the thermostat on the wall and should ask whether it goes back when they leave.

Six brands, specific models

The rebate covers ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Copeland Sensi, Mysa and Sinopé, and only the model numbers the program page lists for each. A thermostat from the same brand that is not on the list earns nothing, so match the box to the page before you pay. Check that your furnace or heat pump works with the model as well, which the maker's compatibility checker will tell you.

Check your history first

The most common reason for a refusal is an earlier offer. If you ever received a thermostat, a discount or a rebate on one from Enbridge Gas, Save on Energy or Home Renovation Savings, the program treats this as a second claim. If you are not sure, look for old emails or ask the program before you buy.

How to claim in Peterborough

  1. Check that your home type, heating and cooling match the eligibility card, and that you have not had a thermostat offer before.
  2. Pick one of the listed models from ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Copeland Sensi, Mysa or Sinopé.
  3. Get a code from the program page and use it at checkout, or buy first and upload the receipt within 60 days.
  4. If you have central air, enroll the same thermostat in Peak Perks. Hydro One is your local distributor, but Peak Perks is run by Save on Energy.
  5. If your household income is under the program limits, call 1-844-770-3148 before buying, since a free thermostat may be available.
