What the Home Renovation Savings program pays for windows and doors in Peterborough

We re-read the program's page and its eligibility requirements on October 3, 2026. Windows and doors are paid only inside the assessment stream, so every amount here comes with an assessment and at least two upgrades.

Three window openings, or one door, sliding door or skylight opening, count as one qualified measure. Two windows alone earn nothing.

Program cap

Set by your heating fuel

$10,000 for homes heated by electricity, oil, propane or wood, and $5,000 for homes heated by Enbridge gas.

The program is run by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy. Post-audits must be scheduled by November 30, 2026 and completed by December 31, 2026, or within 180 days of your first assessment, whichever comes first.

An older city

The 2021 Census counts 11,240 owner-occupied detached houses built before 1981 in Peterborough, with 59% of all households owning. 57% live in detached houses and 68% in an eligible house type. Major repairs were reported by 6.1%. Only 7% live in tall apartment buildings, but 18% live in low-rise buildings, which the program excludes.

Colder than the GTA

Peterborough's January average low is -11.4°C and the 2015 to 2024 record was -31.2°C, colder than Toronto or Hamilton. Heat loss through old windows therefore costs more than in the Golden Horseshoe. The audit will show how much, and the rebate is a small offset.

Counting openings in an older house

Older Peterborough houses often have many small windows, and the rebate pays $100 for each rough opening. Replacing three windows in three openings earns $300, but replacing two earns nothing. If your quote has an odd number of small replacements, ask whether adding a third opening, or including a door, changes the total.

Calendar

With the first assessment, supplier lead times and the follow-up audit, a Peterborough project that starts in October will be tight against the December 31, 2026 deadline. Tell your advisor your target window installation date when booking.

How the program counts a mixed job

The program's own examples show how to add it up. Three windows in three openings plus one sliding door in one opening earns $400 and counts as one measure. Three windows sharing one opening plus a door and a sliding door earns $200. Two windows in two openings earns nothing. A Peterborough owner with a mix of small and large frames should ask the installer to work through the same arithmetic on the actual house.

Payment and paperwork

Once the advisor has submitted all required documents after the follow-up assessment, the rebate arrives within 60 days by cheque or within 30 days by Interac e-Transfer. You will need the invoices for the audits and the work, and a property tax bill. Choose e-Transfer if you want the money sooner, and make sure the contact details on file are current.

How to claim in Peterborough

  1. Confirm you own the home, it has been occupied for six months and it is one of the eligible house types.
  2. Book the first home energy assessment with a registered energy advisor before any work starts.
  3. Choose at least one more upgrade to pair with the windows, and get quotes that count rough openings the way the program does.
  4. Tell the advisor your target installation date when booking.
  5. Have a professional install complete windows or doors with frames, keep the ENERGY STAR labels on until the follow-up assessment, and book it.
