Up to $5,000 for solar

Solar Rebates in Mississauga

Mississauga has 244,575 households and 70% own, but 27% live in tall apartments that cannot take the rebate. For house owners, Alectra and the net metering rule are the two things to settle first.

Quick quiz: solar in Mississauga

Questions about Mississauga, from the data behind this page. Tap an answer to see why.

1. Which utility's programs apply to our Mississauga rebate guide?

Alectra Utilities is the utility we use for Mississauga. Rebates often depend on who supplies your power or gas, so check yours first.

2. Daily peak sun hours in Mississauga average about:

Our 2020-2024 sunshine sample for Mississauga averages about 3.9 peak sun hours a day. Fewer hours means less solar power per panel, so the size of the system matters.

3. What is the largest 'up to' solar figure on our Mississauga summary?

Our summary for Mississauga: $1,000/kW up to $5,000 (Home Renovation Savings; no net metering). The amount you get depends on your home, income and utility, so use the calculator.

4. Renters make up what share of Mississauga households?

The 2021 Census counts 72,350 renter households out of 244,575 in Mississauga. Many rebates go to owners, and some programs have separate rules for landlords and tenants.

The eligible roofs

Mississauga has 90,650 detached households, 26,900 semi-detached and 34,440 row households. A semi or row house has a smaller roof and shares walls. The program accepts rooftop systems on the house or a permanent structure such as a garage, and a roof shared with a neighbour needs a clear boundary for the installation.

Alectra Utilities

Alectra is your distribution company. It must approve the connection before you buy, and the contractor submits a generation connection application to it. Ask Alectra how a load-displacement system differs from a net metered one in its process, and what size it will approve.

Do the sums before signing

The rebate is $1,000 per kW capped at half the eligible cost, so a 5 kW system could earn $5,000 only if its pre-HST cost is $10,000 or more. A cheaper system earns half its cost. Ask the installer to show the pre-HST price so you can see which cap applies.

Why net metering matters here

Many Ontario solar quotes assume net metering, where extra power sent to the grid earns bill credits. This program does not allow it: a system under a net metering agreement is not eligible, and the system must be sized for load displacement, meaning it should match what the home uses. A Mississauga owner who wants the rebate should tell every installer up front, because a system designed to export will not qualify.

Rooftop only

The panels must be on the roof of the house or of a permanent structure on the same property and connected to the home's meter, such as a detached garage. Ground mounts are not eligible, and neither are systems on trailers or other temporary structures. Mississauga has 90,650 detached houses, where roof orientation and shading decide the system size.

Timing of the project

The order matters. The contractor submits the pre-installation application with a quote dated within 60 days, you receive written pre-approval and your utility's approval, and only then do you buy and install. The system must be finished within 12 months of approval, and the contractor files the post-installation application within 30 days of installation.

No leases or financing arrangements

Rental, leasing and lease-to-own solar arrangements are not eligible for the rebate, and the system must be new, owned by you and bought in Canada. If you pay with a loan, the rebate still applies, but the interest is not an eligible cost.

How to claim in Mississauga

  1. Confirm you own an eligible house type with a roof or garage that suits panels.
  2. Talk to Alectra Utilities about the connection process and the maximum system size allowed before you sign anything.
  3. Choose a licensed electrical contractor and ask for a quote that shows the DC capacity in kW and the eligible costs without HST.
  4. Let the contractor file the pre-installation application, and wait for written IESO pre-approval and utility approval before buying or installing.
  5. After the install, check that the post-installation application is filed within 30 days with the ESA certificate and connection agreement.
