What Ontario pays for a smart thermostat in Hamilton

We re-read the three program pages on October 4, 2026. The rebate is province-wide, so the amount is the same in every city, and the page that matters is the one that says whether your home and heating qualify.

The lower-city and mountain split

Hamilton mixes older detached and semi-detached housing with apartment buildings: 16% of households live in buildings of five or more storeys and 9% in smaller apartment buildings. Households in houses can use the $125 rebate, and those in apartments may find the free Energy Affordability Program the better question to ask.

Alectra Utilities in Hamilton

Alectra Utilities is the distribution company. The rebate page asks for Enbridge Gas heating, or electric heating or cooling on the Ontario grid, so Alectra Utilities's role is the electricity account. With a January low of -6.6°C and a record of -26.7°C, heating is the main use for most homes here.

The free route

The Energy Affordability Program covers postal codes beginning K, L, M, N and P, which includes Hamilton. Income limits for comprehensive support run from $48,220 for one person to $96,439 for four and $107,823 for five or more. Owners and renters who hold the utility account can apply, by phone at 1-844-770-3148 or online. The program says it is fully funded and accepting applications.

If your home heats with an Enbridge gas furnace or boiler, also look at Enbridge's Home Winterproofing Program. It gives free insulation and draft proofing, and anyone who gets one of those can also get a smart thermostat installed. The before-tax income limits run from $48,220 for one person up to $127,576 for seven or more, and people on programs such as Ontario Works or the Guaranteed Income Supplement can qualify too. Apply online or call 1-844-770-3148. If your home heats with electricity, apply to the Energy Affordability Program instead.

Six brands, specific models

The rebate covers ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Copeland Sensi, Mysa and Sinopé, and only the model numbers the program page lists for each. A thermostat from the same brand that is not on the list earns nothing, so match the box to the page before you pay. Check that your furnace or heat pump works with the model as well, which the maker's compatibility checker will tell you.

If you rent

The rebate page does not say owners only. It asks that you live in an eligible home type and that either gas or electric heating or cooling applies. In Hamilton, 34% of households rent. A tenant should still get the landlord's agreement before replacing the thermostat on the wall and should ask whether it goes back when they leave.

How to claim in Hamilton

  1. Check that your home type, heating and cooling match the eligibility card, and that you have not had a thermostat offer before.
  2. Pick one of the listed models from ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Copeland Sensi, Mysa or Sinopé.
  3. Get a code from the program page and use it at checkout, or buy first and upload the receipt within 60 days.
  4. If you have central air, enroll the same thermostat in Peak Perks. Alectra Utilities is your local distributor, but Peak Perks is run by Save on Energy.
  5. If your household income is under the program limits, call 1-844-770-3148 before buying, since a free thermostat may be available.

Common questions

Is there a Hamilton thermostat program besides the provincial one?

We did not find one on the pages we read.

Does the rebate cover a Sinopé thermostat?

Yes, for the specific Sinopé models the program page lists.

What if my landlord owns the thermostat?

Ask the landlord first. The page does not say owners only, but a replacement changes their property.

Can I get a free one in Hamilton?

If your income is under the limit for your household size, yes, through the Energy Affordability Program. Hamilton postal codes begin with L.
