What Ontario pays for new appliances in Hamilton
We re-read the program's appliance page on October 4, 2026. The rebates are province-wide, so the amounts are the same in every city, and the rules about what you replace and which model you buy are what decide a claim.
Heat pump clothes dryer
The largest of the six appliance rebates, for a new ENERGY STAR Most Efficient heat pump dryer replacing an electric dryer.
Induction cooktop or range
For a new induction cooktop or range on the program's product list, replacing an existing electric one.
Washing machine
For a new ENERGY STAR Most Efficient washer on the program list.
Fridge
For a new ENERGY STAR Most Efficient refrigerator replacing an existing electric one.
Freezer
For a new ENERGY STAR Most Efficient freezer on the list.
Dishwasher
For a new ENERGY STAR Most Efficient dishwasher on the list.
Who can claim
A residential customer on the Ontario grid with an existing electric appliance in need of replacing. Cornwall Electric customers are excluded.
Free route
Income-qualified households can get energy-efficient fridges and freezers at no charge, along with other upgrades.

An older housing stock
About 61% of Hamilton households live in homes built before 1981, and 56% in detached houses. A house's age says little about its fridge, but a city with many older homes also has many old laundry rooms and kitchens where a replacement may need a new circuit. Ask an electrician first if the old appliance sits on shared wiring.
Alectra Utilities and renters
Alectra Utilities distributes power in Hamilton. 34% of households rent, and the page does not say owners only. A tenant should ask the landlord before swapping an appliance that came with the unit. Hamilton postal codes begin with L, so the Energy Affordability Program covers the area.
Fridges and freezers at no cost
The Energy Affordability Program lists energy-efficient refrigerators and freezers among the items that comprehensive support can provide, along with LED bulbs, dehumidifiers and window air conditioners. It does not list washers or dryers, and its saving kits include no major appliances. Income limits run from $48,220 for one person to $96,439 for four, and Hamilton postal codes are among those it covers. Call 1-844-770-3148 to ask.
Adding up the six
The six rebates are $200 for a heat pump dryer, $150 for an induction cooktop or range, $75 for a washer, $50 each for a fridge and a freezer and $25 for a dishwasher. A household that replaced all six would receive $550, though few Hamilton homes will need to swap everything at once. The rebate is flat, so it takes the same amount off an entry model and a premium one.
Most Efficient, not just ENERGY STAR
The rebate is for ENERGY STAR Most Efficient models, which the page describes as going beyond standard ENERGY STAR requirements. A fridge with the ordinary ENERGY STAR mark may not qualify. Each appliance has its own product list linked from the program page, so find the model number there before you pay, whether you buy in Hamilton or online.
What kind of home
Unlike the thermostat rebate, the appliance page lists no home type. It asks for a residential customer on the Ontario grid. It does not address condos or apartments directly, so a Hamilton condo owner or tenant should confirm with the program. 34% of Hamilton households rent, and a tenant should ask the landlord before swapping a fridge or range that came with the unit.
How to claim in Hamilton
- Check that the appliance you are replacing is electric and that you are on the Ontario grid.
- Find a new model on the program's ENERGY STAR Most Efficient list for that appliance.
- Buy it new from any retailer and keep the receipt.
- Upload the receipt on the program page within 60 days of purchase.
- If your household income is under the limits, call 1-844-770-3148 about free fridges and freezers first.
