What the Home Renovation Savings program pays for windows and doors in Hamilton
We re-read the program's page and its eligibility requirements on October 3, 2026. Windows and doors are paid only inside the assessment stream, so every amount here comes with an assessment and at least two upgrades.
Windows and doors
One payment per opening in an outside wall, not per unit. A bay window with three panes in one opening earns $100.
Smallest qualifying job
Three window openings, or one door, sliding door or skylight opening, count as one qualified measure. Two windows alone earn nothing.
Home energy assessment
$600 comes back when the program is completed. Covers the cost of the first and the follow-up assessment once the program is completed.
Three or more upgrades
Windows count as one upgrade. Insulation, air sealing and a heat pump water heater are the others in this stream.
Program cap
$10,000 for homes heated by electricity, oil, propane or wood, and $5,000 for homes heated by Enbridge gas.

The program is run by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy. Post-audits must be scheduled by November 30, 2026 and completed by December 31, 2026, or within 180 days of your first assessment, whichever comes first.
Hamilton's older houses
The 2021 Census counts 66,820 owner-occupied detached houses built before 1981 in Hamilton, second only to Toronto among the Ontario cities we cover. 56% of households live in a detached house, 72% live in an eligible type and 66% own. 6.6% reported a home needing major repairs, above the rate in Brampton (3.3%) or Burlington (4.1%).
Why the bundle matters more than the windows
The assessment stream pays $600 back for the audits and $500 for three upgrades, and the rebates for attic insulation (up to $1,500) and exterior walls (up to $3,600) are much larger than $100 per opening. For a Hamilton house with original windows and thin attic insulation, windows are often the third upgrade that unlocks the bonus. Price all three together and see which combination clears the two-upgrade minimum.
Do the work after the first assessment
Any qualifying work done before the first assessment is not eligible. Owners who already replaced windows last year cannot claim them now, and anyone who got a rebate for those windows from an earlier Enbridge or IESO program cannot be paid twice for them.
Keeping the labels and the receipts
Keep the ENERGY STAR labels on the new windows until your advisor completes the follow-up assessment, and keep invoices for both audits and each upgrade. You also need your property tax bill. In an older Hamilton house with many mismatched openings, it helps to photograph each wall before and after, so the opening count can be checked against the invoice.
If you heat with oil or propane
The program counts homes heated with electricity, oil, propane or wood in the higher $10,000 cap, while Enbridge gas homes have a $5,000 cap. A Hamilton house on oil or propane therefore has more room for a large bundle. A house on gas can still claim windows, but the cap is lower.
How to claim in Hamilton
- Confirm you own the home, it has been occupied for six months and it is one of the eligible house types.
- Book the first home energy assessment with a registered energy advisor before any work starts.
- Choose at least one more upgrade to pair with the windows, and get quotes that count rough openings the way the program does.
- Make sure no windows are replaced before the first assessment.
- Have a professional install complete windows or doors with frames, keep the ENERGY STAR labels on until the follow-up assessment, and book it.
