Up to $5,000 for solar

Solar Rebates in Barrie

Barrie gets about 3.79 peak sun hours a day and averages -10.1°C in January. The program does not care about climate, but snow, shading and roof pitch decide how a system performs.

Quick quiz: solar in Barrie

Questions about Barrie, from the data behind this page. Tap an answer to see why.

1. Which utility's programs apply to our Barrie rebate guide?

Barrie Hydro is the utility we use for Barrie. Rebates often depend on who supplies your power or gas, so check yours first.

2. A solar panel in Barrie sees about how many full-sun hours a day?

Our 2020-2024 sunshine sample for Barrie averages about 3.8 peak sun hours a day. Fewer hours means less solar power per panel, so the size of the system matters.

3. We list solar rebates for Barrie. What is the biggest 'up to' amount?

Our summary for Barrie: $1,000/kW up to $5,000 (Home Renovation Savings; no net metering). The amount you get depends on your home, income and utility, so use the calculator.

4. About what share of homes in Barrie are rented?

The 2021 Census counts 17,880 renter households out of 55,315 in Barrie. Many rebates go to owners, and some programs have separate rules for landlords and tenants.

Barrie Hydro and the connection

Barrie Hydro is the local distribution company. It approves the connection before you buy, and the post-installation file needs its connection agreement and the ESA certificate. Ask what size it allows and how long its review takes, since the project must be finished within 12 months of approval.

Snow and roofs

Barrie's record low was -30.3°C. Panels shed snow better at steeper pitches, and the program does not set a minimum pitch. Ask the installer how winter output was estimated and whether the mounting meets local snow-load requirements.

Housing

58% of Barrie households live in detached houses, and 68% own. About 10% live in homes built since 2011. 12% live in low-rise apartments and 3,555 in duplexes, which are not eligible house types.

Why net metering matters here

Many Ontario solar quotes assume net metering, where extra power sent to the grid earns bill credits. This program does not allow it: a system under a net metering agreement is not eligible, and the system must be sized for load displacement, meaning it should match what the home uses. A Barrie owner who wants the rebate should tell every installer up front, because a system designed to export will not qualify.

What counts as a cost

The rebate is capped at 50% of eligible costs, which cover equipment, permits, approvals and labour. HST, financing costs, insurance, maintenance and spare parts are not eligible costs. A quote should therefore show the pre-HST price and separate any financing, so the program can check that $1,000 per kW does not exceed half.

Timing of the project

The order matters. The contractor submits the pre-installation application with a quote dated within 60 days, you receive written pre-approval and your utility's approval, and only then do you buy and install. The system must be finished within 12 months of approval, and the contractor files the post-installation application within 30 days of installation.

Owners only

You must own the home and be the person paying for the system. A tenant cannot apply for the owner. In Barrie, 32% of households rent, and only eligible house types qualify: single detached, semi-detached, row, townhome or mobile home on a permanent foundation.

How to claim in Barrie

  1. Confirm you own an eligible house type with a roof or garage that suits panels.
  2. Talk to Barrie Hydro about the connection process and the maximum system size allowed before you sign anything.
  3. Choose a licensed electrical contractor and ask for a quote that shows the DC capacity in kW and the eligible costs without HST.
  4. Let the contractor file the pre-installation application, and wait for written IESO pre-approval and utility approval before buying or installing.
  5. After the install, check that the post-installation application is filed within 30 days with the ESA certificate and connection agreement.
