Quick quiz: home energy in Barrie

Questions about Barrie, from the data behind this page. Tap an answer to see why.

1. Which utility's programs apply to our Barrie rebate guide?

Barrie Hydro is the utility we use for Barrie. Rebates often depend on who supplies your power or gas, so check yours first.

2. On average, how low does the temperature fall in Barrie in January?

Our weather sample for Barrie (2015-2024) shows an average January low of -10 °C. Cold-climate heat pumps are tested at low temperatures, so check the rating at your coldest days, not just the average.

3. A solar panel in Barrie sees about how many full-sun hours a day?

Our 2020-2024 sunshine sample for Barrie averages about 3.8 peak sun hours a day. Fewer hours means less solar power per panel, so the size of the system matters.

4. We list heat pump rebates for Barrie. What is the biggest 'up to' amount?

Our summary for Barrie: $1,250/ton up to $7,500 (air source, non-gas homes); up to $12,000 ground source; gas-heated homes $500/ton up to $2,000. The amount you get depends on your home, income and utility, so use the calculator.

5. Out of 100 homes in Barrie, about how many are rented?

The 2021 Census counts 17,880 renter households out of 55,315 in Barrie. Many rebates go to owners, and some programs have separate rules for landlords and tenants.

The appliance page states no end date, so confirm it is still open before you buy.

Which appliance first

In a city with -10.1°C January lows, the washer and dryer run more in winter, and the heat pump dryer pays the most at $200. 58% of Barrie households live in detached houses, where the laundry often sits in a basement or utility room the owner controls.

Barrie Hydro

Barrie Hydro supplies electricity. Barrie postal codes begin with L, which the Energy Affordability Program lists. 32% of households rent, and the page does not say owners only.

Replace, do not add

The program page asks for an existing electric appliance in need of replacing. A new fridge to go in a spare corner, or an induction range where the kitchen had no range, is not a replacement. If you are switching from gas to an electric appliance, the page does not say whether that counts, so ask the program before you buy. Barrie households that already cook on an electric range are the clearest fit for the induction rebate.

Buy new, then upload the receipt

Buy a new appliance from any retailer, then upload the receipt on the program page within 60 days of purchase. Used and refurbished units do not qualify. Keep the receipt, the model number and the delivery date together. Barrie households who buy during a sale should still confirm the model is on the list at the time they check out.

How many can I claim?

The page states no limit per household and no end date. That does not mean unlimited funding, and the program can change. If you plan to replace a washer and a dryer, or a fridge and a freezer, get them on the program's lists first and keep every receipt, since each claim is separate and has its own 60-day window.

When replacing makes sense

About 29% of Barrie's 55,315 households live in homes built before 1981. Age of the house tells you little about the age of the fridge, and a working appliance rarely pays back a swap through a $25 to $200 rebate alone. The rebate suits a replacement you already need to make.

How to claim in Barrie

  1. Check that the appliance you are replacing is electric and that you are on the Ontario grid.
  2. Find a new model on the program's ENERGY STAR Most Efficient list for that appliance.
  3. Buy it new from any retailer and keep the receipt.
  4. Upload the receipt on the program page within 60 days of purchase.
  5. If your household income is under the limits, call 1-844-770-3148 about free fridges and freezers first.
