Quick quiz

Quick quiz: how a home EV charger works

Ten questions on the technology. Tap an answer to see why.

1. A Level 2 home charger runs on:

Level 1 uses a regular 120 V outlet. Level 2 uses the kind of circuit a dryer uses.

2. How does Level 2 charging compare with Level 1?

Level 1 adds only a few kilometres of range per hour. Level 2 can refill most cars overnight.

3. Before installing a charger, what does an electrician check?

A load calculation shows if your panel has room or needs a smart device or an upgrade.

4. Which is a common way to connect a Level 2 charger?

Hardwiring is simple and often preferred for outdoor use.

5. How can smart charging help?

Many chargers and cars let you set a start time.

6. A 7 kW charger delivers about how much energy in an hour?

A kilowatt is power. Multiply by hours to get kilowatt-hours.

7. What does a load management device do?

It can avoid an expensive panel upgrade.

8. What should an outdoor charger be?

Look for an enclosure rating that suits rain, snow and sun.

9. Why check the connector type?

The plug on your car and the one on the charger must match, or you need an adapter.

10. Charging at home on a normal rate usually costs:

Electricity is generally cheaper than fuel for the same distance, and off-peak rates can cut it more.

A home EV charger plugs into your electrical system and charges your car at a steady pace, usually overnight. Most programs pay for a Level 2 charger, the kind that runs on a 240 volt circuit like an electric dryer.

The rebate rules are mostly about the charger and the wiring. Some programs pay only for certain models. Some need a licensed electrician, and some ask for a permit. A few add a bonus if your charger can pause charging at busy times. Read the program page before you buy, because the charger on sale today may not be on the list.

What to check before you buy

  • Is the model on the list? Many programs pay only for chargers on their own qualified list.
  • Your panel. Ask an electrician if your panel has room for a new 240 volt circuit. An upgrade can cost more than the charger.
  • A licensed electrician. Most programs ask for one, and some also ask for a permit.
  • Smart charging. Some programs pay more for a charger that can follow the utility's off-peak hours.
  • Homes and condos. Rules differ for houses, townhomes and condos. Check the program page for your home type.

Common questions

Do I need a Level 2 charger?

Not always. A regular outlet works for short daily trips, but it is slow. A Level 2 charger is faster, and it is what most rebates cover.

Can I get a rebate if I rent or live in a condo?

Some programs include tenants with the owner's consent and some have a separate multi-unit program. Check the official page for your home type.

Is the electrical work covered?

Sometimes. A few programs include wiring and a panel upgrade, but many pay only for the charger. The table links to each program.

Where do I start?

Pick your province or state in the rebate finder, then ask two electricians for a quote on the same charger.
