What Ontario pays for a smart thermostat in Sault Ste. Marie
We re-read the three program pages on October 4, 2026. The rebate is province-wide, so the amount is the same in every city, and the page that matters is the one that says whether your home and heating qualify.
Smart thermostat
One rebate on an eligible smart thermostat, claimed with a code at checkout or with a receipt uploaded within 60 days of buying.
Who is eligible
You must be an Enbridge Gas customer heating mainly with a gas furnace or boiler, or be on the Ontario grid and use electric heat or cooling, and live in a house, semi, row, townhome or mobile home on a permanent foundation.
One per household, ever
A smart thermostat rebate, discount or free device from Enbridge, Save on Energy or Home Renovation Savings in the past rules you out.
Peak Perks
A prepaid card for joining the summer demand response program with central air or a heat pump controlled by an eligible Wi-Fi thermostat.
Energy Affordability Program
Households under the income limits get a programmable or smart thermostat, depending on the home, with other upgrades at no charge.
Cornwall excluded
Cornwall Electric customers cannot join the rebate or Peak Perks.
The rebate page states no end date, so confirm it is still open before you buy.
Few apartments, many houses
Only 6% of households live in buildings of five or more storeys, and 68% own their homes. For most Soo households, eligibility turns on the heating test and prior offers, not on the home type.
Heating in a northern city
January lows average -11.5°C and the coldest day in our records is -30.5°C. The rebate covers Enbridge Gas customers heating mainly with gas, and homes on the Ontario grid that use electric heat or cooling. Sault Ste. Marie Public Utilities is the electricity distributor, and postal codes begin with P, which the Energy Affordability Program lists.
Adding Peak Perks
Peak Perks pays a $75 virtual prepaid Mastercard when you enroll and $20 a year after. It needs central air conditioning, or a heat pump that is part of central air, run by an eligible Wi-Fi thermostat from ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Emerson, Trane or Alarm.com. On hot weekday afternoons the utility can adjust the setting by up to 2 degrees Celsius for no more than three hours, and you can opt out during an event. With the $125, a first year could bring in $200, though Peak Perks cannot be combined with other Ontario demand response programs.
The free route
The Energy Affordability Program covers postal codes beginning K, L, M, N and P, which includes Sault Ste. Marie. Income limits for comprehensive support run from $48,220 for one person to $96,439 for four and $107,823 for five or more. Owners and renters who hold the utility account can apply, by phone at 1-844-770-3148 or online. The program says it is fully funded and accepting applications.
If your home heats with an Enbridge gas furnace or boiler, also look at Enbridge's Home Winterproofing Program. It gives free insulation and draft proofing, and anyone who gets one of those can also get a smart thermostat installed. The before-tax income limits run from $48,220 for one person up to $127,576 for seven or more, and people on programs such as Ontario Works or the Guaranteed Income Supplement can qualify too. Apply online or call 1-844-770-3148. If your home heats with electricity, apply to the Energy Affordability Program instead.
Two ways to claim
Before you buy, press the program page's Get code button, receive a code by email and enter it at checkout on the Home Depot, Best Buy, Copeland Sensi, ecobee or Mysa website. After you buy, press Apply for rebate and upload the receipt within 60 days. Either way the thermostat has to be one of the listed models, and a Sault Ste. Marie homeowner who buys in a store should keep the receipt.
How to claim in Sault Ste. Marie
- Check that your home type, heating and cooling match the eligibility card, and that you have not had a thermostat offer before.
- Pick one of the listed models from ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Copeland Sensi, Mysa or Sinopé.
- Get a code from the program page and use it at checkout, or buy first and upload the receipt within 60 days.
- If you have central air, enroll the same thermostat in Peak Perks. Sault Ste. Marie Public Utilities is your local distributor, but Peak Perks is run by Save on Energy.
- If your household income is under the program limits, call 1-844-770-3148 before buying, since a free thermostat may be available.
