What Ontario pays for a smart thermostat in Ottawa
We re-read the three program pages on October 4, 2026. The rebate is province-wide, so the amount is the same in every city, and the page that matters is the one that says whether your home and heating qualify.
Free thermostat: Energy Affordability Program
Households under the income limits get a programmable or smart thermostat, depending on the home, with other upgrades at no charge.
Smart thermostat
One rebate on an eligible smart thermostat, claimed with a code at checkout or with a receipt uploaded within 60 days of buying.
Who is eligible
You must be an Enbridge Gas customer heating mainly with a gas furnace or boiler, or be on the Ontario grid and use electric heat or cooling, and live in a house, semi, row, townhome or mobile home on a permanent foundation.
One per household, ever
A smart thermostat rebate, discount or free device from Enbridge, Save on Energy or Home Renovation Savings in the past rules you out.
Peak Perks
A prepaid card for joining the summer demand response program with central air or a heat pump controlled by an eligible Wi-Fi thermostat.
Cornwall excluded
Cornwall Electric customers cannot join the rebate or Peak Perks.

Free thermostat in Ottawa: who gets one and how to ask
The Energy Affordability Program covers postal codes beginning K, L, M, N and P, which includes Ottawa. Income limits for comprehensive support run from $48,220 for one person to $96,439 for four and $107,823 for five or more. Owners and renters who hold the utility account can apply, by phone at 1-844-770-3148 or online. The program says it is fully funded and accepting applications.
If your home heats with an Enbridge gas furnace or boiler, also look at Enbridge's Home Winterproofing Program. It gives free insulation and draft proofing, and anyone who gets one of those can also get a smart thermostat installed. The before-tax income limits run from $48,220 for one person up to $127,576 for seven or more, and people on programs such as Ontario Works or the Guaranteed Income Supplement can qualify too. Apply online or call 1-844-770-3148. If your home heats with electricity, apply to the Energy Affordability Program instead.
Where a thermostat earns its keep in Ottawa
Ottawa's average January low is -13.2°C, and the coldest recorded day in our data set reached -32.2°C. Long heating seasons give a schedule more hours to work with than in the warmer southwest of the province. The program does not promise a saving, so treat the rebate as a discount on a tool and the savings as something you earn by setting it well.
Hydro Ottawa and Peak Perks
Hydro Ottawa supplies electricity to most of the city, and Peak Perks is open to its customers if they have central air or a heat pump with an eligible Wi-Fi thermostat. The program runs summer afternoon events lasting up to three hours that move the setting by up to 2°C. With long winters here, the heating side of the thermostat is where most of its use will be.
Two ways to claim
Before you buy, press the program page's Get code button, receive a code by email and enter it at checkout on the Home Depot, Best Buy, Copeland Sensi, ecobee or Mysa website. After you buy, press Apply for rebate and upload the receipt within 60 days. Either way the thermostat has to be one of the listed models, and an Ottawa homeowner who buys in a store should keep the receipt.
Check your history first
The most common reason for a refusal is an earlier offer. If you ever received a thermostat, a discount or a rebate on one from Enbridge Gas, Save on Energy or Home Renovation Savings, the program treats this as a second claim. If you are not sure, look for old emails or ask the program before you buy.
How to claim in Ottawa
- Check that your home type, heating and cooling match the eligibility card, and that you have not had a thermostat offer before.
- Pick one of the listed models from ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Copeland Sensi, Mysa or Sinopé.
- Get a code from the program page and use it at checkout, or buy first and upload the receipt within 60 days.
- If you have central air, enroll the same thermostat in Peak Perks. Hydro Ottawa is your local distributor, but Peak Perks is run by Save on Energy.
- If your household income is under the program limits, call 1-844-770-3148 before buying, since a free thermostat may be available.
Common questions
How do I get a free thermostat in Ottawa?
Call the Energy Affordability Program at 1-844-770-3148 or apply online. If your household income is under the limit (for example $48,220 for one person or $96,439 for four) and your postal code starts with K, you can get a programmable or smart thermostat at no charge. Ottawa postal codes start with K.
Is there a free thermostat in Ottawa?
Yes, if your household income is under the limit. The Energy Affordability Program gives free thermostats, with limits from $48,220 for one person to $96,439 for four. Gas-heated homes can also get one installed through Enbridge's Home Winterproofing Program when they get free insulation or draft proofing. Everyone else can get $125 back.
Will Hydro Ottawa give me a thermostat?
We did not find a free-thermostat offer on the pages we read. Check Hydro Ottawa's own program page for any change.
Does the Ottawa loan program pay for a thermostat?
We have not found that a thermostat is listed there, so ask Better Homes Ottawa before assuming it is.
Can I use Peak Perks with a heat pump?
Yes, if the heat pump is part of central air conditioning and an eligible Wi-Fi thermostat controls it.
