What Ontario pays for a smart thermostat in Greater Sudbury

We re-read the three program pages on October 4, 2026. The rebate is province-wide, so the amount is the same in every city, and the page that matters is the one that says whether your home and heating qualify.

Cold winters, a large area

Sudbury's average January low is -15.2°C and the coldest day in our data reached -35.9°C. 61% of households live in detached homes. With a long heating season, a thermostat spends more of its year managing heat than cooling, and the rebate page's heating test (gas, or electric heat or cooling) is the one to read closely.

Heating fuel and the rebate

The page covers Enbridge Gas customers heating mainly with gas, and homes on the Ontario grid that use electric heat or cooling. It does not mention oil, propane or wood. If you heat that way and have no electric heat or cooling, confirm with the program before buying. Greater Sudbury Hydro is the local distributor.

The free route

The Energy Affordability Program covers postal codes beginning K, L, M, N and P, which includes Greater Sudbury. Income limits for comprehensive support run from $48,220 for one person to $96,439 for four and $107,823 for five or more. Owners and renters who hold the utility account can apply, by phone at 1-844-770-3148 or online. The program says it is fully funded and accepting applications.

If your home heats with an Enbridge gas furnace or boiler, also look at Enbridge's Home Winterproofing Program. It gives free insulation and draft proofing, and anyone who gets one of those can also get a smart thermostat installed. The before-tax income limits run from $48,220 for one person up to $127,576 for seven or more, and people on programs such as Ontario Works or the Guaranteed Income Supplement can qualify too. Apply online or call 1-844-770-3148. If your home heats with electricity, apply to the Energy Affordability Program instead.

Adding Peak Perks

Peak Perks pays a $75 virtual prepaid Mastercard when you enroll and $20 a year after. It needs central air conditioning, or a heat pump that is part of central air, run by an eligible Wi-Fi thermostat from ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Emerson, Trane or Alarm.com. On hot weekday afternoons the utility can adjust the setting by up to 2 degrees Celsius for no more than three hours, and you can opt out during an event. With the $125, a first year could bring in $200, though Peak Perks cannot be combined with other Ontario demand response programs.

Check your history first

The most common reason for a refusal is an earlier offer. If you ever received a thermostat, a discount or a rebate on one from Enbridge Gas, Save on Energy or Home Renovation Savings, the program treats this as a second claim. If you are not sure, look for old emails or ask the program before you buy.

How to claim in Greater Sudbury

  1. Check that your home type, heating and cooling match the eligibility card, and that you have not had a thermostat offer before.
  2. Pick one of the listed models from ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Copeland Sensi, Mysa or Sinopé.
  3. Get a code from the program page and use it at checkout, or buy first and upload the receipt within 60 days.
  4. If you have central air, enroll the same thermostat in Peak Perks. Greater Sudbury Hydro is your local distributor, but Peak Perks is run by Save on Energy.
  5. If your household income is under the program limits, call 1-844-770-3148 before buying, since a free thermostat may be available.
