What the Home Renovation Savings program pays for windows and doors in Cambridge

We re-read the program's page and its eligibility requirements on October 3, 2026. Windows and doors are paid only inside the assessment stream, so every amount here comes with an assessment and at least two upgrades.

The RetrofitWR loan

Retrofit Waterloo Region offers loans up to $40,000 at 2.5% fixed, over 10 or 15 years, repaid on the GrandBridge Energy bill. The loan is open to GrandBridge customers in Cambridge and North Dumfries, and the upgrades must cut the home's energy use by at least 25%. That requirement favours a bundle of insulation, air sealing and heating over windows alone, so think of windows as one piece of the package. Free coaching from the Region is available to homeowners anywhere in Waterloo Region.

Cambridge housing in numbers

The 2021 Census counts 51,270 households in Cambridge. 48% live in homes built before 1981, and 12,780 are owner-occupied detached houses from that period. 57% live in a detached house, 77% in an eligible house type and 69% own. Major repairs were reported by 5.2%.

Two programs, two tests

The loan needs a 25% energy reduction. The rebate needs two qualified measures and the audit before any work. A Cambridge owner can meet both by planning one bundle: audit first, then insulation, air sealing and windows, with the follow-up assessment showing the result. The loan's reduction test is the Region's, not the province's, so confirm what evidence it wants.

Owners with tenants

Where an owner has tenants, the owner must apply to the rebate program. For the loan, ask the Region what rules apply to rental properties.

Timing against the December deadline

The rebate program wants the post-audit finished by December 31, 2026 and scheduled by November 30. A loan application adds its own review time, so start the loan and the audit in parallel and tell both teams the window installation date.

How to claim in Cambridge

  1. Confirm you own the home, it has been occupied for six months and it is one of the eligible house types.
  2. Book the first home energy assessment with a registered energy advisor before any work starts.
  3. Choose at least one more upgrade to pair with the windows, and get quotes that count rough openings the way the program does.
  4. Ask GrandBridge Energy and the Region about the RetrofitWR loan at the same time as booking the audit.
  5. Have a professional install complete windows or doors with frames, keep the ENERGY STAR labels on until the follow-up assessment, and book it.
