Up to $5,000 for solar

Solar Rebates in Brampton

Brampton has 96,015 detached households and 78% of households own, and only 23% of homes predate 1981. Newer roofs are a plus for solar, but the load-displacement rule still shapes the design.

Quick quiz: solar in Brampton

Questions about Brampton, from the data behind this page. Tap an answer to see why.

1. Whose programs should a Brampton homeowner check first?

Alectra Utilities is the utility we use for Brampton. Rebates often depend on who supplies your power or gas, so check yours first.

2. A solar panel in Brampton sees about how many full-sun hours a day?

Our 2020-2024 sunshine sample for Brampton averages about 3.9 peak sun hours a day. Fewer hours means less solar power per panel, so the size of the system matters.

3. What is the largest 'up to' solar figure on our Brampton summary?

Our summary for Brampton: $1,000/kW up to $5,000 (Home Renovation Savings; no net metering). The amount you get depends on your home, income and utility, so use the calculator.

4. About what share of homes in Brampton are rented?

The 2021 Census counts 39,990 renter households out of 182,470 in Brampton. Many rebates go to owners, and some programs have separate rules for landlords and tenants.

Newer homes, newer roofs

With about 21% of households in homes built since 2011 and a low major-repairs rate (3.3%), many Brampton roofs have years of life left. That is helpful because panels should outlast the roof beneath them. Ask the installer how roof age was checked, and whether any warranty on the roof is affected.

Alectra

Alectra Utilities approves the connection. The contractor attests in the pre-installation application that it will submit the generation connection application, and the program asks for the connection agreement and ESA certificate at the end.

Household use sets the size

A load-displacement system is sized to the household's own use, so a larger household can justify a larger system. Peak sun is about 3.86 hours a day. Ask the installer to size to your annual use rather than to the roof area.

Why net metering matters here

Many Ontario solar quotes assume net metering, where extra power sent to the grid earns bill credits. This program does not allow it: a system under a net metering agreement is not eligible, and the system must be sized for load displacement, meaning it should match what the home uses. A Brampton owner who wants the rebate should tell every installer up front, because a system designed to export will not qualify.

What counts as a cost

The rebate is capped at 50% of eligible costs, which cover equipment, permits, approvals and labour. HST, financing costs, insurance, maintenance and spare parts are not eligible costs. A quote should therefore show the pre-HST price and separate any financing, so the program can check that $1,000 per kW does not exceed half.

Timing of the project

The order matters. The contractor submits the pre-installation application with a quote dated within 60 days, you receive written pre-approval and your utility's approval, and only then do you buy and install. The system must be finished within 12 months of approval, and the contractor files the post-installation application within 30 days of installation.

Owners only

You must own the home and be the person paying for the system. A tenant cannot apply for the owner. In Brampton, 22% of households rent, and only eligible house types qualify: single detached, semi-detached, row, townhome or mobile home on a permanent foundation.

How to claim in Brampton

  1. Confirm you own an eligible house type with a roof or garage that suits panels.
  2. Talk to Alectra Utilities about the connection process and the maximum system size allowed before you sign anything.
  3. Choose a licensed electrical contractor and ask for a quote that shows the DC capacity in kW and the eligible costs without HST.
  4. Let the contractor file the pre-installation application, and wait for written IESO pre-approval and utility approval before buying or installing.
  5. After the install, check that the post-installation application is filed within 30 days with the ESA certificate and connection agreement.
