A Abbotsford example
A 1,900 square foot Abbotsford house heated by baseboards gets a ducted heat pump sized to keep 22°C at -5°C. If the job is finished and paid by October 31, 2026, BC Hydro pays $4,000 plus a bonus of up to $1,000. That is up to $5,000.
Winter in Abbotsford
Abbotsford's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was 0.1°C, and the coldest reading in that time was -18.3°C. Most winter nights sit well above BC Hydro's -5°C test point, so a correctly sized cold-climate unit should carry the house almost all winter. The few nights near -18.3°C are when backup heat earns its keep. Ask the installer what the system does on those nights and whether your old baseboards will stay as backup.
Homes in Abbotsford
The 2021 Census counted 53,235 households in Abbotsford. About 69% own their home and 37% live in a detached house (19,760 homes). Of those households, 6,070 own a detached house built before 1981. Many of those older houses are larger than 1,200 square feet, which matters: BC Hydro requires a multi-split or central system for whole-home rebates in homes over that size.
Basement suites and the 1,200 square foot rule
If your house has a suite, count the whole home's heated floor area when you talk to the installer. Over 1,200 square feet, a single wall unit cannot qualify for the $4,000 whole-home rebate; you need a multi-split with heads in more rooms, or a ducted system. A single head can still qualify for the $1,500 partial rebate if it meets at least half the heating load.
Only for homes replacing electric heat
BC Hydro's heat pump rebate is only for homes that are heated mainly by electricity today: baseboards or an electric furnace. If your home heats with natural gas, oil or propane, BC Hydro pays nothing for the switch. The gas-to-heat-pump rebate for all households ended on April 11, 2025. Income-qualified households can still use the CleanBC Energy Savings Program.
Extra money in parts of Abbotsford
BC Hydro names Abbotsford and Mount Lehman on its list of community-based offers. In select postal codes there, it adds a top-up to the standard rebate: $4,000 more for a whole-home heat pump, or $1,500 more for a partial one. With the $4,000 standard rebate and the bonus to October 31, 2026, that is up to $9,000. Not every Abbotsford address qualifies, so type your postal code into BC Hydro's postal code checker before you get quotes. You do not apply for the top-up on its own. BC Hydro adds it to your rebate from the postal code of the install address. The job still needs an HPCN contractor and a home heated mainly by electricity.
What the heat pump must do
For the $4,000 whole-home rebate, the heat pump must keep 22°C inside at -5°C outside, shown by a CSA F280-12 heat loss calculation. It must be on BC Hydro's eligible list, with HSPF2 of 8.5 or higher and SEER2 of 15.2 or higher. A home over 1,200 square feet needs a multi-split or central system. If the unit meets at least half your heat, it can earn the $1,500 partial rebate instead.
The bonus ends October 31, 2026
BC Hydro is adding up to $1,000 for heat pumps that are installed, invoiced and paid between August 1 and October 31, 2026. Apply by November 30, 2026. It is first come, first served. After October 31, the normal $4,000 and $1,500 amounts still apply.

Common questions
Is Abbotsford cold enough to need a cold-climate unit?
Yes. BC Hydro's list requires units that hold 22°C at -5°C or colder, and Abbotsford reached -18.3°C between 2015 and 2024. A cold-climate model is the safe pick.
I heat with gas in Abbotsford. Can I still get a rebate?
Not from BC Hydro. Their heat pump rebate is only for homes that replace electric heat. If your household income qualifies, the CleanBC Energy Savings Program pays up to $13,000 for a gas-to-heat-pump switch at Level 1.
Do I need an HPCN contractor?
Yes. Since June 1, 2026, BC Hydro pays only for installs by a Home Performance Contractor Network member. Self-installs do not qualify.
Can I get a rebate if I heat with gas?
Not from the utility rebate. It is only for replacing electric heat. Income-qualified households can use the CleanBC Energy Savings Program, which pays up to $13,000 at Level 1 for central or 3+ head systems.
How long do I have to apply?
Six months from the invoice date for BC Hydro. For the limited-time bonus, apply by November 30, 2026.
