What insulation rebates pay in Tacoma

We read Tacoma Power's insulation page on October 6, 2026. A Tacoma Power Participating Contractor must do the work. The rebate covers part of the bill from that contractor.

Income-qualified

Working it out

A Tacoma house with a bare attic, bare walls and an uninsulated floor over a crawlspace could earn $750 three times, or $2,250. If the three jobs cost $9,000 together, which is only an example, the rebate covers a quarter of it. The zero percent loan could cover up to $10,000 of the contractor's bill.

Tacoma's older houses

The US Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) says about 64 percent of Tacoma homes were built before 1980, and about 27 percent before 1940. Only about 18 percent were built in 2000 or later. Tacoma Power's rules require a home that heats mainly with electricity, and about 63 percent of Tacoma homes do. So an older house with electric heat is the best match for this rebate. A house built after 2000 probably has more insulation than the program's starting levels.

What does not qualify

Tacoma Power does not pay for manufactured homes, major remodels where building code already requires upgraded insulation, new construction, do-it-yourself work, buildings with five or more units or homes that already got an insulation incentive from Tacoma Power. Because the rebate is a one-time offer per property, plan all three areas in one project if you can. Homes that still have knob-and-tube wiring need a passing inspection report from a licensed and bonded electrician. Ask your contractor to check the wiring before they book the work, because a failed inspection can hold up the whole rebate.

Papers you need

After the project, you and your contractor send Tacoma Power the application, a bid made on its form, an invoice that meets its rules and an insulation certificate with the home's square footage and the new insulation type and R-value. The rebate covers part of the contractor's bill, so your contractor should lower the price or you will be reimbursed according to the form. Ask which one applies before work begins.

Plan the order of work with your contractor. Air sealing the attic comes with the attic rebate, so the same crew should seal the gaps before blowing in new insulation. Ask the contractor to write down the square footage, the old and new R-values and the type of insulation for every area, since the insulation certificate must list them. If any one of those lines is missing, Tacoma Power may send the paperwork back.

How to claim a Tacoma insulation rebate

  1. Confirm that Tacoma Power serves your home and that your main heat is electric.
  2. Pick a Tacoma Power Participating Contractor and ask for a bid on the Tacoma Power form.
  3. Check that your existing R-values are at or below the starting levels.
  4. If you want a loan, get approval before work starts.
  5. Send the application, invoice and insulation certificate when the work is done.
