What heat pump rebates pay in Tacoma

We read Tacoma Power's heat pump page on October 6, 2026. Each rebate needs a Tacoma Power Participating Contractor, and none are paid for do-it-yourself work, new construction or a home that already received a heat pump incentive from Tacoma Power.

Working it out

A Tacoma home that replaces an electric forced-air furnace with a variable-speed heat pump gets a $2,000 rebate. Suppose the installed price is $14,000, which is only an example. Borrowing that full amount at zero percent over 84 monthly payments would cost about $167 a month. Tacoma Power's page says the loan covers a set amount of your contractor's bill, but it does not say how the loan and the rebate are combined, so ask the Energy Advisor before you plan the math.

Tacoma heating in numbers

The US Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) says about 63 percent of Tacoma homes use electricity as their main heat, 33 percent use utility gas and about 1 percent use oil. That makes Tacoma a strong fit for these rebates, because electric forced-air furnaces and baseboards are what the largest rebate replaces. About 61 percent of homes are detached houses, and about 56 percent are owner-occupied.

Technical rules in plain words

The unit must be certified by the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute and have a heating rating of at least 9.0 on the older HSPF scale or 7.5 on the newer HSPF2 scale. It also needs a cooling rating of at least 15 SEER or 14.3 SEER2. A ductless heat pump must be installed in the main area of the home. For central systems, your contractor must prepare heat load, sizing and balance point calculations. Ask to see those papers. They show whether the system is the right size for your house.

The invoice has to meet Tacoma Power's rules too, and the application needs the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute certificate for the unit.

Why the loan can matter more

A zero percent loan means you pay back only what you borrow. On a $14,000 job over 84 months, that is about $167 a month. Because the loan is for homes with existing electric zonal heat or an electric furnace, it fits the same homes that earn the biggest rebate. The loan is not available if you already have a heat pump or a ductless unit. Ask for pre-approval first, because the application and project must be approved by Tacoma Power before work begins.

How to claim a Tacoma heat pump rebate

  1. Check that Tacoma Power serves your home and note what heats it now.
  2. Choose a Tacoma Power Participating Contractor.
  3. If you want a loan, get pre-approval before work starts.
  4. After the install, send the application, the invoice, the heat load and sizing papers, and the certificate for the unit.
  5. Keep copies of everything you send.
