Heat Pump Water Heater Rebates in Cape Breton

Cape Breton homes get the same $800 heat pump water heater rebate as the rest of Nova Scotia. What is different is the housing: most Cape Breton households live in detached houses, where there is more often room for one than in an apartment. Here is how to claim it and when it pays.

Why it suits Cape Breton homes

A heat pump water heater pulls heat from the air in the room, so it needs open space around it, usually in a basement or utility room. Statistics Canada's 2021 Census counted 31,100 single-detached households in Cape Breton Regional Municipality, about 74% of all households. Only about 4,665 households, 11%, live in apartment buildings. Compare that with Halifax, where 36% of households live in apartments. In Cape Breton, most homes have the kind of space these units need.

Cape Breton's homes are also older. About 68% of households live in homes built before 1981. If your electric tank is near the end of its life, the timing is right: you are buying a tank either way, and the rebate narrows the gap to a heat pump model.

Which models qualify

The unit must be ENERGY STAR certified. Through the assessment, Efficiency Nova Scotia's guide also asks for a Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) of at least 2.00 for tanks under 56 gallons and at least 2.20 for 56 gallons and up. You'll find the UEF on the spec sheet and the ENERGY STAR listing.

Savings at Nova Scotia Power rates

Cape Breton is on Nova Scotia Power, at 19.128 cents per kWh plus a $20.08 monthly base charge. A heat pump water heater uses much less power than a standard electric element to heat the same water. Our Nova Scotia savings calculator uses the current rate to work out your own number. A cold basement makes the unit work a bit harder in winter, and most models switch to a backup element when they need to.

If your water is heated with oil, the savings case is different: switching removes a fuel bill. Ask the installer whether your electrical panel has room for a new circuit.

  4. Install it with the wiring and clearance the manufacturer asks for.
  5. Keep the receipt and model number.

Common questions

Is there a heat pump water heater rebate in Cape Breton?

Yes. Efficiency Nova Scotia pays $800, either off the price at participating retailers or through a Home Energy Assessment. We found no extra Cape Breton Regional Municipality top-up.

Is the rebate different in Cape Breton than in Halifax?

No. It is a provincial rebate, so the $800 is the same everywhere in Nova Scotia.

Do I need an energy assessment for the water heater rebate?

No. The instant rebate at participating stores needs no assessment.

Will a heat pump water heater work in a cold Cape Breton basement?

Yes, but it works harder when the room is cold, and most models use a backup element when needed. Check the model's operating range before buying.
