Quick quiz: how water heating works

Ten questions on the technology. Tap an answer to see why.

1. How does a heat pump water heater heat water?

It works like a refrigerator in reverse, pulling heat out of the air.

2. When does a tankless water heater heat water?

It heats on demand, so it has no standby loss, but it needs enough power or gas flow.

3. Compared with a regular electric tank, a heat pump water heater uses:

A standard electric tank turns each unit of power into one unit of heat. A heat pump moves several.

4. What does a heat pump water heater need around it?

In a tiny closet it can run short of heat. Ask the installer about room volume and airflow.

5. What side effect does a heat pump water heater have on its room?

It pulls heat from the air, which helps in a hot basement and can make a cold one chillier.

6. What does a tank's 'first-hour rating' tell you?

Match it to your family's busiest hour, such as the morning showers.

7. Why do many installs use a mixing valve?

A hotter tank holds more usable hot water, and the valve blends in cold water before it reaches the tap.

8. What does a tank's anode rod do?

It sacrifices itself to slow rust, and it needs replacing every few years.

9. About how long does a water tank last?

Ageing tanks can leak, so plan a replacement before it fails.

10. Why do heat pump water heaters have an electric element mode?

Hybrid or electric mode helps when the household uses a lot of hot water at once.

Short answer: Yes, replacing an electric water heater with a heat pump water heater in Nova Scotia gets you $800 back from Efficiency Nova Scotia. Most people get it off at checkout at participating stores (ENERGY STAR models only). Efficiency Nova Scotia says a heat pump water heater can cut your water heating costs in half. The rebate is the same in Halifax, Sydney and all of Cape Breton.

Heat pump water heater rebate in Nova Scotia

As of September 28, 2026, there are two ways to get it. You can only use one.

Way to claimAmountHow it works
Instant rebate$800Taken off at checkout at participating retailers. ENERGY STAR models only.
Home Energy Assessment$800Book an assessment ($199) before you buy. Install between your first and final visit. Only if you didn't get the instant rebate.

The model must meet a minimum efficiency: a UEF of at least 2.00 for tanks under 56 gallons, 2.20 for bigger ones. The store or your installer can confirm this before you buy.

Doing more than the water heater? Go the Home Energy Assessment route. The $800 then counts toward the same up-to-$5,000 total as insulation, heat pumps and windows. See all Nova Scotia rebates.

Lower income? HomeWarming offers free upgrades. Check it before you pay for anything.

Heat pump water heater cost in Nova Scotia

We don't publish a price, because it changes a lot by model, tank size and how much work your basement needs. A price you read online is rarely the price you'll pay. What your quote should include:

  • The unit itself, before the $800 instant rebate comes off.
  • Install labour, including removing and disposing of the old tank.
  • A condensate drain. Heat pump water heaters drip water, like an air conditioner. It needs somewhere to go.
  • Any electrical work. Most plug into the same kind of circuit as your old tank, but ask.

Get two or three written quotes. Ask each one for the price after the $800.

Is it worth it? Do the math for your home

Here's a simple way to check, using real Nova Scotia numbers:

  1. Find how much electricity your water tank uses in a year. An electrician or your installer can estimate it, or look for a monitor reading.
  2. Take half of that. That's roughly what a heat pump water heater saves, based on Efficiency Nova Scotia's "cut in half" figure.
  3. Multiply by 18.3 cents (Nova Scotia Power's 2026 energy charge, before riders). It goes up to 19.1 cents on January 1, 2027.

Example only: if your tank used 3,000 kWh a year, half is 1,500 kWh. At 18.3 cents, that's about $275 a year. Now take your quote, subtract $800, and divide by your yearly savings. That's your payback in years.

When to get one, and when to skip it

If…Our advice
Your electric tank is 10+ years old or leakingGood time to switch. Plan it now so you're not stuck buying whatever's in stock during an emergency.
Your family uses a lot of hot waterGood fit. The more hot water you use, the more you save.
The tank sits in an open, unfinished basementGood fit. It needs air around it, and cooling an unfinished basement doesn't matter much.
The tank is in a small closetAsk first. It may need louvred doors or ducting. Some closets just won't work.
You live alone and use little hot waterMaybe not. Savings will be small, so payback is slow.
Your tank is almost newWait. Replace it when it wears out.

Heat pump vs electric tank vs tankless

TypeNS rebateGood forWatch out for
Standard electric tankNoneLowest upfront cost; fast emergency swapHighest power use of the three
Electric tanklessNone foundSmall spaces; endless hot waterOften needs a bigger electrical panel
Heat pump (hybrid)$800Cutting your power billNeeds room around it; cools the space it's in

A heat pump water heater works like a fridge in reverse. It pulls heat from the air around it and puts it into the water. "Hybrid" means the same thing: it also has a backup electric element for busy mornings.

What about tankless? We found no Efficiency Nova Scotia rebate for electric tankless water heaters. Older articles that say "up to $2,500 for any efficient water heater" are wrong.

Does it work in a cold Nova Scotia basement?

Usually, yes. Most units sit in a basement or utility room. They work best in a space that stays well above freezing and has plenty of air around it. Check the model's minimum room temperature in its manual. Because it cools the room a little, it can make a finished basement feel cooler in winter.

What size do I need?

  • 1–2 people: 40 gallons is usually enough
  • 3–4 people: 50 gallons
  • 5 or more: 65–80 gallons

Heat pump water heaters recover slower than a plain tank. If your family takes back-to-back showers, size up one step.

Cape Breton and Sydney: hybrid water heater rebates

Cape Breton homes get the same $800 as the rest of the province. We found no extra Cape Breton or CBRM top-up. Nova Scotia Power serves both Cape Breton and Halifax, so the savings math above is the same. Local details: Cape Breton water heater rebates · Cape Breton rebates.

Halifax: replacing an electric water heater

Same $800, same rules. Halifax homeowners doing a bigger project can also look at the city's Solar City financing for solar, which is a loan, not a rebate. Local details: Halifax water heater rebates · Halifax rebates.

What to do next

  1. Check whether you qualify for free upgrades through HomeWarming.
  2. Decide how you'll claim the $800: in store, or through a Home Energy Assessment booked before you buy.
  3. Ask the installer: Is this model ENERGY STAR? Where will the condensate drain go? Does my space have enough air?
  4. Compare top-rated local installers, ranked by Google reviews. It's free for homeowners. Replacing electric baseboards too? See Halifax heat pump installers or Cape Breton heat pump installers.
