Quick quiz: home energy in Vancouver

Questions about Vancouver, from the data behind this page. Tap an answer to see why.

1. Rebates in Vancouver often depend on the utility. Which one do we use for Vancouver?

BC Hydro is the utility we use for Vancouver. Rebates often depend on who supplies your power or gas, so check yours first.

2. In January, Vancouver nights usually bottom out near:

Our weather sample for Vancouver (2015-2024) shows an average January low of 2 °C. Cold-climate heat pumps are tested at low temperatures, so check the rating at your coldest days, not just the average.

3. About how many peak sun hours a day does Vancouver get on average?

Our 2020-2024 sunshine sample for Vancouver averages about 3.4 peak sun hours a day. Fewer hours means less solar power per panel, so the size of the system matters.

4. What is the largest 'up to' heat pump figure on our Vancouver summary?

Our summary for Vancouver: Up to $4,000 from BC Hydro when replacing electric heat (+ up to $1,000 bonus for installs done by Oct 31, 2026); income-qualified gas/oil/propane switches up to $13,000 via CleanBC. The amount you get depends on your home, income and utility, so use the calculator.

5. Out of 100 homes in Vancouver, about how many are rented?

The 2021 Census counts 166,485 renter households out of 305,335 in Vancouver. Many rebates go to owners, and some programs have separate rules for landlords and tenants.

What BC Hydro pays for windows and doors in Vancouver

We re-read BC Hydro's window and door page on October 2, 2026. It says homes within the City of Vancouver municipal boundary are not eligible for the Tier 2 rebate, and FortisBC's listing carries the same exclusion. Nothing on either page names a replacement program for Vancouver, so we show none.

What this means in dollars

Replacing 12 windows and 2 doors in a house just outside the city line, in Burnaby for example, would be 14 openings at $100 each, or $1,400. The same job in Vancouver earns $0 from these two programs. Put that difference in your budget before you compare quotes.

Why Vancouver is excluded

BC Hydro's page says only that homes inside the City of Vancouver municipal boundary are not eligible for the Tier 2 window and door rebate. It does not give a reason, so we will not guess one. What matters for you is the practical result: neither BC Hydro nor FortisBC will pay it,.

Check whether your property sits inside the City of Vancouver boundary. Addresses in Burnaby, Richmond and the North Shore are outside it and can claim.

Where Vancouver's older homes stand

The 2021 Census counted 305,335 households in Vancouver. About 131,330 (43%) live in homes built before 1981, but 62% of households live in apartments and 55% rent. Only 18,275 own a detached house from before 1981. For those homeowners the window rebate is the missing piece, since insulation and water heater rebates still work.

Is it still worth replacing windows?

Vancouver's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was 1.7°C and the coldest day was -14.1°C. Winters are mild and damp. Replacement windows with a low U-factor can still cut drafts and noise and reduce condensation. But without a rebate the payback is slow, so ask whether repairs, weatherstripping or storm panels meet your goal for less.

Keep the U-factor of 1.22 or lower in mind when you buy. If the rules change or you move outside the boundary, your windows will already qualify.

What you can still claim

BC Hydro's insulation rebate pays up to $5,500 across attic, wall, basement and floor areas, and the heat pump water heater rebate pays up to $1,000 when you replace an electric tank. A second eligible upgrade can earn a bonus of up to $2,000. See our Vancouver insulation page and water heater page.

If your income is lower

BC Hydro sends income-qualified customers to the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program instead, and the two cannot be combined. The 2026 program document lists no insulation or window rebates, so the free Energy Conservation Assistance Program is the route to ask about.

How to claim in Vancouver

  1. Confirm whether your address is inside the City of Vancouver boundary.
  2. If it is, skip the window rebate and ask about insulation and water heater rebates instead.
  3. If it is not, get quotes for windows with a U-factor of 1.22 or lower.
  4. Keep the invoice and photos of each manufacturer label.
  5. Apply within six months of the invoice date.

Common questions

Can I claim the window rebate in Vancouver?

No. BC Hydro and FortisBC both exclude homes in the City of Vancouver from the Tier 2 window and door rebate.

Which nearby cities can claim?

Homes outside the City of Vancouver boundary, such as in Burnaby or Richmond, can claim if they meet the other rules.

Does the insulation rebate apply in Vancouver?

Yes. Insulation, heat pump and heat pump water heater rebates still apply to eligible homes.

Is there a CleanBC window rebate?

We found none. The 2026 Energy Savings Program document lists no window or insulation rebates.

Will the exclusion change?

We re-read BC Hydro's page on October 2, 2026 and it still lists the exclusion. We check the page monthly.
