A Fort St. John 1970s bungalow

A 1,200 square foot attic at R-12 brought to R-50 adds R-38. The formula gives 0.02 x 38 x 1,200 = $912, so the $900 cap applies. Adding R-12 to 800 square feet of wall cavity pays 0.09 x 12 x 800 = $864. The total is $1,764, by our arithmetic.

The coldest city in our BC list

Fort St. John's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was -15.0°C, and the coldest day was -42.2°C. That is 5 degrees colder than Prince George on average and the coldest low in our list. A heating system runs flat out for weeks. Heat that leaks through an old attic does not take a day off.

Fort St. John's homes in numbers

The 2021 Census counted 8,775 households in Fort St. John. Of those, 3,690 (42%) live in homes built before 1981, and 2,035 are owner-occupied detached houses from that period. Half the households live in detached houses and 42% rent. About 7.5% say their home needs major repairs, the highest share in our BC list.

If you rent, the account holder applies. Anyone else needs the account holder's signed consent form.

Which program applies

BC Hydro's rebate is only for homes heated mainly by electricity. A natural gas, oil or propane home is not eligible. Gas customers can look at their gas company's rebates. FortisBC lists the same formula for its own gas customers, so check which company serves your address.

Which insulation to choose

BC Hydro accepts batts, loose fill, board and spray foam. In a cold climate, compare quotes by finished R-value and ask how the contractor will handle air sealing, since leaks can waste a good attic layer. The rebate cannot exceed the invoice cost.

If your income is lower

BC Hydro sends income-qualified customers to the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program instead, and the two cannot be combined. The 2026 program document lists no insulation or window rebates, so for lower incomes the free Energy Conservation Assistance Program is the route to ask about.

Rules to check

  • The home must be at least 12 months old and a primary residence.
  • An HPCN member must do the work.
  • Fix pest and moisture problems first.
  • Apply within six months of the invoice date.

We did not find Fort St. John insulation companies in our Google review data, so there is no ranked list on this page. Use BC Hydro's contractor search.

How to claim in Fort St. John

  3. Keep the final invoice.
  4. Apply online within six months.
  5. Add another upgrade to check the bonus.
